So, it?s been awhile since I?ve written anything for this site.? However, thanks to the Village Beer Merchant and their guests for this evening, Southern Tier Brewing Company, for inspiring me to update the site.? If you?re a fan of beer and have managed to neglect the opportunity to step foot into this quaint beer and food retailer, you are truly missing out.? I am completely envious, jealous, and proud of this establishment.? The idea of craft beer store on Elmwood Ave., however obvious it may seem and upset I am for not having this idea first, it honestly is a remarkable and delightful edition to the community.? The owner(s) and employees of this establishment deserve every bit of credit for the success of their store.? On that note?
Southern Tier ?Unearthly? has quite possibly been my favorite beer for about 4 years now.? A few beers have come close, a few breweries have almost unseated Southern Tier?s dominance over my palate, yet most brews from Southern Tier Brewing Company remain on top.? I?m pretty sure most of the staff at the Village Beer Merchant would also agree on this sentiment? My affection for this beer began a few years back while visiting the brewery on a Saturday afternoon.? I remember its the first time, I actually had the chance to taste the raw ingredients before sampling the beer.? Later, it was made clear that the beer I was drinking went by the name of ?Unearthly?.? I can recall how fresh all the ingredients tasted mixed together in the glass.? The hoppy, but bitter, but somewhat sweet and savory notes won me over.? I still to this day compare and judge the hoppy taste and aroma of this beer against others.? For me, for some odd reason, granted its an imperial IPA, just has that magical balance any superior IPA should possess.? If it doesn?t, it always falls short.
One can experience a few different things while sipping on this Imperial IPA called ?Unearthly.?? Once again, I?d describe the taste as having a phenomenal hop balance.? Often I pick up a solid citrus, grapefruit type taste that?s not too bitter and the biscuity (good word) malt by no means makes this beer overly sweet.? It?s very drinkable beer, almost a more hefty summer session beer, especially if you?re session would include getting blacked out after a couple hours or less on a Saturday afternoon.? It has such a smooth taste, you forget about the intense ABV%, which always tends to get me.? It?s light on the carbonation and has very clean and clear varying copper/amber tone.? It?s a very complex IPA, yet a very basic good ole? clean tasting beer with tons of character.? Best part is you can find it almost anywhere craft beers are sold in Western New York.
