Saturday was supposed to mark the wedding of 85-year-old Playboy mogul Hugh Hefner and 25-year-old model-turned-singer Crystal Harris. But on Tuesday, June 14, Crystal called off the ceremony. She may be the latest, but she's not the first celebrity runaway bride (or groom). Here are some others stars who abruptly ended their trips to the altar.
Crystal Harris and Hugh Hefner
On Christmas Eve of last year Hugh Hefner tweeted that he had given an engagement ring to his girlfriend Crystal Harris. The wedding was scheduled for Saturday, June 18. But just days before the ceremony, Crystal ended the relationship. To make matters worse, the latest issue of Playboy hit the stands featuring Harris on the cover and introducing her as Mrs. Crystal Hefner. In retaliation, Hef added a sticker to the girlie mag that read "Runaway Bride." And he reportedly moved a new 25-year-old playmate into his bedroom.
Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland
In 1991 a 23-year-old Julia Roberts called off her wedding to fiancee Kiefer Sutherland just days before the ceremony. The preparations were in full swing on a soundstage on 20th Century Fox where the nuptials were to take place, but the work was never completed. To add insult to injury, the day that they were supposed to tie the knot, she flew to London with his best friend, actor Jason Patrick. Eight years later Roberts would ironically star in the movie "Runaway Bride."
Richard Jefferson and Kesha Ni'cole Nichols
San Antonio Spurs forward Richard Jefferson seemed pretty committed to his impending marriage to Nets dancer Kesha Ni'cole Nichols in 2009. That is until just hours before the $2 million ceremony was about to take place. At that point the player decided to call the whole thing off, and reportedly appeased some of his guests by turning over his Black Amex card to their disposal for the evening.
Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck
Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck were scheduled to get married on September 14, 2003 near Santa Barbara, California. But days before, they canceled the ceremony blaming the media frenzy. Four months later, her publicist confirmed that the couple had called it quits for good. And with that, the pair that launched the couple-naming craze when they were dubbed Bennifer, was through. They both went on to happy pastures. He married Jennifer Garner in 2005 and she got hitched to Mark Anthony in 2004. They both have two kids each.
Rachel Hunter and Jarret Stoll
In 2009, with just seven weeks to go until their mid-August wedding, Rachel Hunter and Jarret Stoll called off their wedding. The 27-year-old hockey player reportedly informed his friends of the split via email. And the 39-year-old model, and former Mrs. Rod Stewart who was in the thick of planning the big day, allegedly didn't see it coming.
Jesse Spencer and Jennifer Morrison
Talk about an awkward day at work, imagine having to go back to the set of your hit TV show after breaking up with your fiance/co-star. Such was the case when "House" actor Jesse Spencer called off his wedding to cast mate Jennifer Morrison that was scheduled to happen a few months later. Ironically his character Dr. Robert Chase , and hers, Dr. Allison Cameron , got married on the show in 2009. But in a case of art imitating life, that relationship didn't work out either and the couple divorced the following season.
Tara Reid and Michael Axtmann
Tara Reid doesn't have the best track record when it comes to actually making it to the altar. In 2001 she split with fiancee Carson Daly before they ever exchanged rings. Then just last year, she called off her four-month engagement to web entrepreneur Michael Axtmann just four weeks before their trip down the aisle was to take place.
