New Maserati SUV likely to get Chrysler Hemi V-8 | MotorwayAmerica

(June 25, 2011) It now looks as if the new SUV model planned by Maserati ? yes, Virginia, every automaker has to have one ? will be powered by a Chrysler engine, not the Ferrari-sourced engine in the current sports car.

Word has it that the sport utility vehicle, with production to start within 12 to 18 months, will get a range-topping 6.4-liter Hemi found in the high-performance Jeep Grand Cherokee STR8. In its current form it makes 465 horsepower and can take the Grand Cherokee from 0 to 60 in 4.8 seconds. That would make it comparable to the Porsche Cayenne turbo.

If the Maserati lineup includes a base model, it may be outfitted with the award-winning Pentastar V-6 making something just sought of 300 horses.

So why would Maserati not use its Ferrari V-8? Most likely it's a cost consideration, but there will probably be an explanation that the Hemi produces more low-end torque than Ferrari?s finicky engines, which in the end is more suitable for getting heavy SUVs to move quickly off the line.

The other reason is that the engine has already been designed to fit the platform that will underlie the new Maserati SUV, the same one found in the Jeep Grand Cherokee as well as the recently revealed 2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class.

What will this new Maserati SUV look like. That's still up for debate. Perhaps it will resemble the 2003 Maserati Kubang concept sport utility found pictured below.
