I bet you would do a lot of sleeping if you have nothing to do and you are in a temperature controlled room and lying on a comfortable bed. In similar circumstances, the dog would do a lot of sleeping too. Dogs are known to be great sleepers. These animals spend more than half of their life having a close eye! Because dogs are often seen curled down and sleeping, many people think that these animals are lazy.

Generally, dogs are known to be very active animals. Dog owners are aware that the pet has to have opportunities to exercise otherwise, they will be bored and develop destructive habits. Dogs like humans would derive benefits from sleeping. However, there are various reasons for the dog?s inclination to sleep a lot.

General health condition, personality and the level of activity largely influence the dog?s sleeping pattern. Generally, dogs have high energy levels but some breed like the Newfoundland and St, Bernard are not very energetic dog breeds. These breeds are even called rug or mat dogs because of their inclination to lie down rather than indulge in strenuous activities. These mat dogs would sleep for 16 to 18 hours every day.

Working dogs on the other hand would be up and about most of the time. A dog utilized to herd or protect livestock would be seen constantly patrolling the area where the animals being protected are located. Dogs used by law enforcers to sniff bombs and narcotics would not be seen sleeping the day away when they are on the job. All around farm dogs would not be seen sleeping the day away because of the work they need to perform.

It would not be surprising for dogs that live in apartments to have more time to sleep given the fact that they would have limited opportunities to be active outdoors unlike dogs that are allowed to roam and play outdoors. Dogs are pampered pets because owners would give all the comforts to the pet. From being barn dogs that sleep anywhere and in any kind of weather condition, dogs now live in temperature controlled homes and sleep in softly padded beds complete with doggie blankets. These conditions would entice the dog to sleep most of the day. These dogs may appear to be sleeping all day but at the slightest sound, these dogs would wake up easily. A dog that appears to be deeply sleeping will be alert in an instant. As long as a dog is on guarding duty, the dog owner would sleep soundly at night knowing that no intruders will be able to enter the house and cause the family harm.
