bringing the total number of U.S. troops killed inside Afghanistan to 2,000 according to some measures.</p><p>A U.S. official confirmed the latest death in the 11-year-old conflict on Sunday.</p><p>Over a decade since the war began, TODAY's Lester Holt visits the battlefields outside Kandahar Province and the Horn of Panjwai to see where things stand.</p><p>The toll has climbed steadily in recent months with a spate of attacks by Afghan army and police against American and NATO troops, and questions about whether allied countries will achieve their aim of helping the Afghan government and its forces stand on their own after most foreign troops depart in little more than two years. The U.S. is preparing to withdraw most of its combat forces by the end of 2014.</p> <p>The Associated Press reported Sunday that the latest death was the 2,000th member of the U.S. armed services killed inside Afghanistan since the U.S.-led invasion on Oct. 7, 2001. ?However, that AP figure did not include those who died after sustaining?injuries in Afghanistan or those killed in other countries as part of the same campaign against al-Qaida and the Taliban.</p><p>According to <strong>icasualties.org, an independent monitoring organization</strong> which uses the wider definition, the latest death brings the toll of U.S. service members to 2035.?At least a further 1,190 coalition troops have also died in the Afghanistan war, it says.</p><p>The Brookings Institution, a?Washington-based research center, said?40.2 percent of the deaths were caused by improvised explosive devices, with the majority of those after 2009 when President Barack Obama ordered a surge of 33,000 troops to combat heightened Taliban activity. According to the Washington-based research center, the second highest cause, 30.6 percent, was hostile fire.</p><p>U.S. Army specialist Jereme Sawyer, who has been in physical rehab after losing both his legs, returns home to see his family. KING's Amy Moreno reports.</p><p>Tracking civilian deaths is much more difficult. According to the U.N., 13,431 civilians were killed in the Afghan conflict between 2007, when the U.N. began keeping statistics, and the end of August. Going back to the U.S.-led invasion in 2001, most estimates put the number of Afghan deaths in the war at more than 20,000.</p><p>The 2001 invasion targeted al-Qaida and its Taliban allies after the Sept. 11 attacks, which claimed nearly 3,000 lives in the United States.</p><p>"The tally is modest by the standards of war historically, but every fatality is a tragedy and 11 years is too long," Michael O'Hanlon, a fellow at the Brookings, told the AP. "All that is internalized, however, in an American public that has been watching this campaign for a long time. More newsworthy right now are the insider attacks and the sense of hopelessness they convey to many. "</p><p>Attacks by Afghan soldiers or police ? or insurgents disguised in their uniforms ? have killed 52 American and other NATO troops so far this year.</p><p>The so-called insider attacks are considered one of the most serious threats to the U.S. exit strategy from the country. In its latest incarnation, that strategy has focused on training Afghan forces to take over security nationwide ? allowing most foreign troops to go home by the end of 2014.</p><p>As American troops draw out of Afghanistan, officials say the removal plan is on track but that time is precious and the Taliban threat is worrisome. NBC's Lester Holt reports. </p><p>Although Obama has pledged that most U.S. combat troops will leave by the end of 2014, American, NATO and allied troops are still dying in Afghanistan at a rate of one a day.</p><p>Even with 33,000 American troops back home, the U.S.-led coalition will still have 108,000 troops ? including 68,000 from the U.S. ? fighting in Afghanistan at the end of this year. Five years ago, the foundation implemented a program called In Good Taste to raise even more money for the cause. The group partners with more than 100 restaurants in and around the city, and when you dine, $1 per check or more (if you're feeling generous) goes directly to the Lynn Sage Scholars Program at Northwestern University. And the participating restaurants? Well, they run the gamut from the the laid-back and casual (Wow Bao, Adobo Grill) to the chic and upscale (Four Seasons Hotel, Ritz Carlton), so there's something for everyone.</p> <p>Other restos are getting in on the <em>giving back</em> action, too, in their own ways. Places like Bar Umbriago and the LM restaurant group will offer special "pink" drinks such as a Pink Martini or Kir Royale. And portions of the proceeds will go to the Lynn Sage Foundation, or Susan G. Komen Foundation. </p> <p>But drinks aren't the only thing on the menu. Places like Chicago Cut, Porkchop and Kanela Breakfast Club will offer specially priced dishes, in which a portion of the proceeds go to a cancer foundation. Many of these are countries that experienced changes in leadership during the Arab Spring: Egypt, <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348950538_2">Libya</span>, Yemen, and Tunisia.</p> <p>Ben Gilbert is a news editor for Al-Monitor.com, a new website devoted to news from and about <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348950538_3">the Middle East</span>. Gilbert is currently working out of <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348950538_1">Beirut, Lebanon</span>, and has been living in the Middle East for seven years. He was in Libya during the Arab Spring, and is now witnessing the Mid-East protests first-hand in Lebanon.</p> <p>When we spoke with Gilbert, he had had to leave his office early because of <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348950538_0">protests</span> in downtown Beirut. The phone connection was lost a few times during the conversation, so our apologies for the changing sound quality.</p> <p>The ongoing protests across the Middle East have spurred a larger discussion over how America should handle these emerging democratic governments in the region.?<em>National Journal</em> senior correspondent James Kitfield has written on this topic several times in the last few weeks. Kitfield has covered national security and foreign policy for over two decades, winning awards for his first-hand coverage of the war in Afghanistan and the surge in Iraq. The problem is that fees and other semi-hidden expenses add up fast. Making matters worse, the "relative safety" of bonds may not be all it appears. In this edition of Investing 101, Larry Swedroe of Buckingham Asset Management gives viewers some tips and words for the wise on how to maximize their bond investments.</p> <p><strong>1. Understand your fees</strong></p> <p>While not begrudging a broker's right to make a fee on business transactions, Swedroe cautions investors to know exactly what they're being charged. Hint, it may be more than they think.</p> <p>"The Supreme Court has actually ruled that even fees as much as 6% are not unreasonable," says Swedroe in the attached video. They may not be unreasonable in the eyes of the court, but paying 6% for a bond yielding 3% puts investors in a severe hole. Ask your broker outright about his fees and make sure you're comfortable with them.</p> <p><strong>2. Use Mutual Funds or ETFs</strong></p> <p>Rather than going out and buying one bond or another Swedroe suggests using bond ETFs or mutual funds. Available ETFs range from the popular iShares Barclays 20+ Yr Treasury Bond (TLT) for longer term government securities to the SPDR Barclays Capital High Yield ETF with the appropriate ticker (JNK).</p> <p>Sure, they all have fees as well but "at least with the ETF's you get broad diversification," says Swedroe.</p> <p><span id="more-18742"/><strong>3. Be conservative</strong></p> <p>Although less risky than stocks in theory, bonds aren't a surefire way to avoid market volatility. With Treasury rates effectively stuck at zero, investors tend to "stretch for yield" as Swedroe puts it. There is no free lunch on Wall Street. If you want returns you have to take risks. In this environment a junk bond may only have a yield of 7% and contain much of the risk of a common stock.</p> <p>When the risks show up, as they always eventually do, the illusion of safety disappears. These bumps in the road can come as a jolt to conservative bond investors unaccustomed to volatility. Then, through reverse construction, and image enhancement, the malware recreates whatever room in which you may be standing, including the objects in that room.</p> <p>The<em> Review</em> stipulates that the technology could even be used to gleen credit card numbers, or serve to provide intelligence for thieves looking to steal certain items, or case living areas from the inside?Or, more likely, to steal secret documents from other unfriendly governments.</p> <p>From the <em>Review</em>:</p> <p><em>[They] call their visual malware PlaceRaider?and have created it as an app capable of running in the background of any smartphone using the Android 2.3 operating system. Their idea is that the malware would be embedded in a camera app that the user would download and run, a process that would give the malware the permissions it needs to take photos and send them.</em></p> <p>The <em>Review's</em> report comes in conjunction with another report?that a smart phone crowdsourcing app can map the floorplans of any building.</p> <p>The military applications for these technologies, it bears mentioning, are virtually limitless. A drug-sniffing dog now is the only certified member of the police force in the small eastern New <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348757482_0">Mexico</span> <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348757481_4">town of Vaughn</span>.</p> <p>Police Chief Ernest "Chris" Armijo decided to step down Wednesday after news stories reported that he wasn't allowed to carry a gun because of his criminal background.</p> <p>"He decided the attention was distracting," said Dave Romero, an attorney for the town.</p> <p>State officials said Armijo couldn't carry a gun since acknowledging that he owed tens of thousands of dollars in delinquent child support payments in Texas. Armijo also faces new felony charges after being accused of selling a town-owned rifle and pocketing the cash.</p> <p>Romero said Armijo is working to clear up the latest case. He said Armijo has not ruled out seeking the police chief's position again if his case is resolved and the position is open.</p> <p>According to records, the only qualified member of the Vaughn Police Department is Nikka, a drug-sniffing dog. Vaughn's other officer isn't certified and pleaded guilty to charges of assault and battery last year. Noncertified officers can't make arrests and can't carry firearms.</p> <p>But Romero said not having an officer qualified to carry a gun didn't put Vaughn at risk. "England doesn't allow police officers to carry guns," he said. "Sometime the strongest weapon in law enforcement is communication."</p> <p>Vaughn, a town of about 450 located 104 miles east of Albuquerque, is a quiet town that is an overnight stop for railroad workers. And while residents say there is no crime problem, the town is set deep in what U.S. Homeland Security Investigations officials say is an isolated region of the state popular with drug traffickers. Officials say the desolate roads in Guadalupe County make it hard for authorities to catch smugglers moving drugs from Mexico.</p> <p>Guadalupe County Sheriff Michael Lucero said since news about the police chief's record became public his department has helped patrol Vaughn. But he said those efforts have put a slight strain on his already short-staffed department.</p> <p>"I visit the town at least once a month," said Lucero. "The important thing is to keep a presence so residents know we're there to help if we're needed."</p> <p>Romero said town officials are considering whether to hire another police chief or keep the department staffed with just one officer. He said it's unclear whether the town will keep the police dog, which had been in Armijo's care.</p> <p>When approached by a reporter from The Associated Press at his Vaughn home, Armijo said he had no comment, and he declined to grant access to the canine for photographs or video.</p> <p>The dog's kennel could be seen in Armijo's backyard, and a police truck marked "K-9" was parked in his driveway.</p> <p>At Penny's Diner, residents said they were embarrassed by the attention the episode has put on the small town.</p> <p>"There's just a whole lot of nothing going on here," said cook Joyce Tabor. "We have very little crime. It's quiet. The most unambiguous data to date on the elusive 113th atomic element has been obtained by researchers at the RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-based Science (RNC). A chain of six consecutive alpha decays, produced in experiments at the RIKEN Radioisotope Beam Factory (RIBF), conclusively identifies the element through connections to well-known daughter nuclides.</p> <p>The search for superheavy elements is a difficult and painstaking process. Such elements do not occur in nature and must be produced through experiments involving nuclear reactors or particle accelerators, via processes of nuclear fusion or neutron absorption. Since the first such element was discovered in 1940, the United States, Russia and Germany have competed to synthesize more of them. Elements 93 to 103 were discovered by the Americans, elements 104 to 106 by the Russians and the Americans, elements 107 to 112 by the Germans, and the two most recently named elements, 114 and 116, by cooperative work of the Russians and Americans.</p> <p>With their latest findings, associate chief scientist Kosuke Morita and his team at the RNC are set follow in these footsteps and make Japan the first country in Asia to name an atomic element. For many years Morita's team has conducted experiments at the RIKEN Linear Accelerator Facility in Wako, near Tokyo, in search of the element, using a custom-built gas-filled recoil ion separator (GARIS) coupled to a position-sensitive semiconductor detector to identify reaction products. On August 12, those experiments bore fruit: zinc ions travelling at 10% the speed of light collided with a thin bismuth layer to produce a very heavy ion followed by a chain of six consecutive alpha decays identified as products of an isotope of the 113th element.</p> <p>While the team also detected element 113 in experiments conducted in 2004 and 2005, earlier results identified only four decay events followed by the spontaneous fission of dubnium-262 (element 105). In addition to spontaneous fission, the isotope dubnium-262is known to also decay via alpha decay, but this was not observed, and naming rights were not granted since the final products were not well known nuclides at the time. The decay chain detected in the latest experiments, however, takes the alternative alpha decay route, with data indicating that Dubnium decayed into lawrencium-258 (element 103) and finally into mendelevium-254 (element 101). The decay of dubnium-262 to lawrencium-258 is well known and provides unambiguous proof that element 113 is the origin of the chain.</p> <p>Combined with their earlier experimental results, the team's groundbreaking discovery of the six-step alpha decay chain promises to clinch their claim to naming rights for the 113th element.</p> <p>"For over 9 years, we have been searching for data conclusively identifying element 113, and now that at last we have it, it feels like a great weight has been lifted from our shoulders," Morita said. "I would like to thank all the researchers and staff involved in this momentous result, who persevered with the belief that one day, 113 would be ours. Franco Fiorito, a member of the regional council of Lazio, the Italian region that includes Rome, was known ironically among his friends as Batman. It was a nickname he earned when he managed to fall off a Harley Davidson still on a kickstand.</p><p>But rather than a superhero, he looks like an actor out of ?The Sopranos? with his slicked-back hairstyle, striped double-breasted suit, bulky figure and bigger than life personality. ??</p> <p>Fiorito, a member of Silvio Berlusconi?s People of Freedom party (PDL), was accused earlier this month of embezzling at least $1.5 million of public funds to pay for everything from oyster dinners, to hotels, aides and apartments.</p><p>Fiorito, who has since resigned, fought the allegations by telling investigators that fellow party members behaved worse than he did ? putting the spotlight on regional president Renata Polverini.</p><p>The scandal proved too much for Polverini, who resigned on Monday, and damaged the reputation of Berlusconi?s already weakened party.</p><p>She denied allegations of any wrong-doing on her part, but admitted that the scandal had exposed infighting within the PDL party and had stripped the regional council of some legitimacy. ??</p><p>But most importantly, it stands as a symbol of a political class that has lost touch with the electorate, and carries on living a lavish lifestyle financed with public funds at a time when most Italians struggle to get by.</p><p>?Why did they call him Batman? He is shameless.?</p> <hr class="excerptEnd"/><p><b>Toga party pix?<br/></b>Apparently Fiorito is not as brazen as another member of the regional council.</p><p>Only days ago, pictures emerged of a lavish toga party organized in 2010 by Carlo de Romanis, a 32-year- old member of Berlusconi?s party. ?</p><p>Romanis organized the party to celebrate his election to the regional council and his return to Rome after eight years working at the European Parliament in Brussels.</p><p>The theme of the party, ?Ulysses returns home and fights his enemies,? was taken seriously by his 2,000 guests. They showed up dressed up as ancient Roman maidservants, gladiators, patricians in laurel wreaths and minotaurs, drinking from ancient-looking jars. Pictures emerged of guests feeding each other grapes, as well as men wearing pig masks fondling female guests.</p> <p>?A party worthy of the last days of ancient Rome, when the narcissistic and decadent elite kept enjoying a lavish lifestyle while the empire was falling apart all around them.</p><p>The similarities might not be so far-fetched. Even though Carlo ?Ulysses De Romanis? insists the $30,000 he paid for the party came from his own pocket, it still upset many Italians who are tired of seeing the political elite enjoying the lifestyle of emperors while they feel the strain of the recent austerity measures and the economic crisis.</p><p>Alex Biasco, a DJ in Milan, told NBC News that the Italian public is partly to blame as well. He said they like to complain about the widespread abuse of office, without acting to bring about any changes.</p><p>?Look at the Spanish: they fill the squares in Madrid to demand the resignation of unfit politicians,? said Biasco.? ?While in Italy we have had politicians who stole for decades, who are corrupt to the core?and yet, Italians only fill their squares when their soccer teams win.?</p><p>Luca Orsenigo, a 38-year-old Telecom manager from Milan, had a similar complaint.?</p> <p>?We got to this point because we deserve it. Instead of going to prison, these people are invited to defend themselves on talk-shows," said Orsenigo, referring to the many TV appearances Fiorito enjoyed after the scandal broke. "As long as these people go unpunished, nothing will change?</p><p><b>Cocaine bust<br/></b>More proof of widespread corruption among Italian governmental institutions came on Tuesday, when the head of the postal service in the Italian Senate was arrested for cocaine trafficking, police said.</p><p>Orlando Ranaldi, 53, is accused of being part of a criminal gang 10 Italians and Albanians who ran a cocaine ring in southern Rome. While not a politician, Orlando held a managerial position in Italy?s upper house of parliament. ?</p><p>?"I only hope that he didn't push inside the Senate," Senator Felice Belisario of the Italy of Values party told Reuters.</p><p>Roberta, a housewife from Rome who gave only her first name, jumped to her own conclusions. ??</p><p>?They are all living the high life, and I can?t believe the guy wasn?t doing ?favors? to the political elite,? she said. ?</p> <p>The recent revelations of champagne-filled toga parties, embezzlement of public funds and cocaine heists have only contributed to widening the gap between the political elite and the electorate.?</p><p>?Once again we are showing the world how corrupt we are.? But Italians, thank God, are not all like Batman and Ulysses,? Alessandra Scolaro, a website designer and member of the People of Freedom party from the Veneto region, told NBC News. ?The best Italians are those who wake up every morning and go to work. And those who make us proud by raising the bar of Italian creativity in the arts and fashion industries. But not previously understood is how this process occurs ? that is, how does information from biological clocks drive rhythms in the electrical activity of pacemaker neurons that, in turn, drives daily rhythms?</p> <p>To understand this mechanism, the researchers examined the biological, or circadian, clocks of Drosophila fruit flies, which are commonly used for research in this area. Earlier studies of "clock genes" in fruit flies allowed the identification of similarly functioning genes in humans.</p> <p>In their study, the researchers focused on eight master pacemaker neurons located in the central brain ? these neurons set the timing of the daily transitions between sleep and wake in the fly. Specifically, they were able to isolate these neurons from animals and identify sets of genes differentially expressed between dawn and dusk.</p> <p>In a series of follow-up experiments, they concentrated on one gene, Ir, whose expression was found to be much higher at dusk than at dawn and much more highly expressed in pacemaker neurons than in the rest of the brain. Ir encodes a potassium channel that helps set the resting state of neurons ? and so its rhythmic expression makes it an excellent candidate to help link the biological clock to pacemaker neuron activity. High levels of Ir expression at dusk should make it much harder for pacemaker neurons to signal than the low levels seen at dawn, a finding that fits with earlier studies showing that pacemaker neurons fire more at dawn than at dusk.</p> <p>The authors also found that genetic manipulations that either increase or decrease Ir levels affect behavioral rhythms. Perhaps more interestingly, these were also associated with changes in the timing and strength of oscillations in the core clock.</p> <p>"Biology is never as simple as we imagine it will be," explained Blau. "We were looking for an output of the biological clock that would link the core clock to neuronal activity. Ir seems to do this, but it also, remarkably, feeds back to regulate the core clock itself. The <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348690524_0">NFL</span> fined <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348690524_3">New England Patriots</span> coach Bill Belichick $50,000 and <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348690524_1">Washington Redskins</span> assistant <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348690524_2">Kyle Shanahan</span> $25,000 on Wednesday for their conduct toward replacement officials.</p><p>The fines come as the league and its referees' union are meeting amid reports they are close to ending the lockout of the regular <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348690524_5">officials</span>.</p><p><span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348690524_7">Belichick</span> grabbed an official's arm at the end of Sunday night's game after the Ravens kicked a winning field goal. Shanahan was cited by the league for "abuse of officials" in Washington's loss to Cincinnati.</p><p>"Whatever the league decides to do, I'll respect and just try and do my job," Belichick said before his fine was announced.</p><p>Shanahan, the son of Redskins coach <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348690524_4">Mike Shanahan</span>, was called for unsportsmanlike conduct for berating officials in the final seconds of the Redskins' 38-31 loss. He also confronted an official in a stadium tunnel after the game.</p><p>Also, the NFL said <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348690524_8">Baltimore Ravens</span> coach <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348690524_6">John Harbaugh</span> won't be fined for making contact with a game official during Sunday's 31-30 win over New England. Ray Anderson, the NFL's vice president of football operations, said Harbaugh did not violate the rule regarding abuse of officials.</p><p>On Monday, the league fined Broncos coach John Fox $30,000 and Tuesday's close of 2,520/2,530.</p> <p> "We have also seen a surge in dollar purchases by commercial banks probably in anticipation of a rate cut, and all this is pressuring the shilling," said <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348657209_2">Faisal Bukenya</span>, head of market making at Barclays Bank.</p> <p> The central bank is scheduled to set its benchmark lending rate next Tuesday after the government releases inflation data for September on Friday.</p> <p> Markets expect there will be another rate cut as policymakers look to shore up economic growth.</p> <p> The cut could cause yields on government securities to fall and stimulate demand in the economy, both of which could put pressure on the shilling as overseas investors stay out of debt auctions and imports rise, thereby driving One was Bishop's former colleague <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348529892_3">Debra Moriarity</span>, who recalled how she tried to take Bishop down after the woman started firing during the meeting.</p> <p> TRYING TO STOP SHOOTING</p> <p> Trained in gun safety by her hunter father, <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348529892_5">Moriarity</span> testified that she ducked and crawled under a table to grab Bishop's legs.</p> <p> "I was yelling, ?Stop, Amy! Stop! Don't do this!'" said Moriarity, who is now chairwoman of the biology department.</p> <p> Moriarity said Bishop then pointed the gun at her. As Moriarity begged for her life, Bishop repeatedly pulled the trigger but the gun jammed, Moriarity testified. She said Bishop was silent during the attack.</p> <p> As a police investigator showed jurors photos of the dead professors on Monday, Bishop put her head on the defense table and softly sobbed. Bishop, who last year had pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect, did not speak during the trial.</p> <p> After her arrest in Alabama, authorities in Braintree, Massachusetts, charged Bishop with the 1986 shooting death of her teenage brother.</p> <p> Authorities in Massachusetts were awaiting the outcome of the Alabama trial before deciding how to proceed in their case.</p> <p> Jurors on Monday did not have to weigh Bishop's guilt in the attempted murder charges, for which Circuit Judge Alan Mann sentenced her to three consecutive life sentences.</p> <p> After the trial, professor Joseph Leahy, who lost an eye in the shooting and has just returned to teaching, said he felt the verdict was just.</p> <p> "Seeing the photos was tough - I was seeing the bodies of my friends," he said. "They took the first three shots, and I got the fourth. Times</i>:</strong></big></p> <p>This weekend, I read an article in the Wall Street Journal about how Harley-Davidson turned itself around using "lean" manufacturing strategies. Lean, or just-in-time, manufacturing is the Toyota production system, which started with W. Edwards Deming and his work with statistical quality control. Whenever I see this kind of article about a large company, I think about how the thoughts and principles can be applied to the smaller companies I work with.</p> <p>As I read this one, three things occurred to me.</p> <p>1. The idea behind lean is to create capacity -- not to reduce employee headcount. In this case, Harley-Davidson reduced its headcount by more than 1,000 people using lean techniques. Harley-Davidson probably can do this just once. It?s a nice, stand-alone establishment close to where the Albion Ferry terminal used to be, at the north tip of Fort Langley.</p> <h2><span><strong>Food</strong></span></h2> <p>In addition to food, we ordered a mini jug of <span><em>Strongbow Cider</em></span>. First, <span><em>Fort Poutine</em></span> isn?t only about fries, cheese curds and gravy. Heaping bowl of house fries topped with spicy ground beef, sauteed onions, mushrooms and blended cheeses, then baked and drenched in beef gravy</p> <p>The <span><em>Personal Pizza</em></span> actually has similar toppings as the Fort Poutine.<span id="more-6664"></span> The crust was not very thin, but it?s light and crispy. Kind of deep-fried bread like. A 10? gourmet pizza with house tomato sauce, and topped with spicy beef, sauteed mushrooms, red onions and drizzled with chipotle sauce</p> <h2><span><strong>Service</strong></span></h2> <p>We were there for about 1.5-2 hours and we saw dishware shattered twice right in front of us, one when they were collecting empty glasses, another when they accidentally dropped a plate of food and spilled some on a customer?s lap. While accidents happen, I was just shocked at how clumsy the servers were and that 2 accidents would happen back-to-back. This also caused a delay in getting our food, so we waited for a good 45 mins-1 hour for a poutine and a pizza. We were offered a discount on our food bill, but we had to suffer through a long wait to get our food. I was really hungry by the time the food finally arrived.</p> <h2><span><strong>Final Thoughts</strong></span></h2> <p>The pub being in Fort Langley is nice but the food and service really needs some more work. Faced with the daunting task of evaluating more than 34,000 drug cases handled by a Massachusetts chemist accused of misconduct, prosecutors and defense attorneys are starting with 1,140 cases of people who are already serving prison sentences based on potentially tainted evidence.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">David Meier, a defense attorney and former prosecutor appointed to help sort through the legal quagmire created by the chemist's alleged actions, on Monday turned over a list of 690 people currently serving sentences in state prisons and 450 who are currently serving sentences in county jails. Samples in all of the cases were tested by chemist Annie Dookhan, who state police say failed to follow testing protocols and deliberately mishandled evidence in some cases.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Meier said it is unclear how many of those samples might have been tainted by Dookhan's actions, but said both sides want to deal first with people who are already in prison.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">"That is our first priority, people who are presently incarcerated," he said.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Meier said lawyers in those cases will now have to work out resolutions on a case-by-case basis.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">"The merits and any alleged issues in any one of those cases is for prosecutors and defense attorneys and judges to determine," he said.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">State police have said Dookhan was involved in testing more than 60,000 drug samples involving about 34,000 defendants during her nine years at the Boston lab. Dookhan resigned in March during an internal investigation by the state Department of Public Health, which ran the lab until state police took over on July 1 as part of a budget directive.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Meier, who was appointed by Gov. Deval Patrick last week, met Monday with a group of district attorneys, defense attorneys and public safety officials. After the meeting, Meier said he turned over a list of currently incarcerated defendants whose cases were worked on by Dookhan, either as the primary chemist, who performs an initial test on a drug sample, or as the secondary chemist, who performs a second, confirmatory test.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">The list does not include thousands of people who are currently awaiting trial, are on probation or are serving federal sentences in cases in which Dookhan tested drug samples.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Since the lab was closed last month, judges in Suffolk and Norfolk counties have already begun to hear motions filed by defense attorneys seeking bail reductions for drug defendants awaiting trial in cases handled by Dookhan. Prosecutors have agreed to many of those motions, citing possibly tainted evidence.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Dookhan hasn't been charged, but the state attorney general's office is conducting a criminal investigation.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">On Monday, a judge in Boston agreed to put the sentences of career criminal David Huffman on hold and set bail for him at $75,000 cash, with GPS monitoring. The 55-year-old Huffman had pleaded guilty in August to trafficking in heroin and cocaine, possession of oxycodone with the intent to distribute and unlawful possession of ammunition and a firearm as an armed career criminal He began serving concurrent seven- to 10-year sentences last month.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Huffman's lawyer, Bernard Grossberg, said the next step will likely be for the defense to ask that Huffman be allowed to withdraw his guilty plea.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">"He would not have pleaded guilty to the gun charges if it was not part and parcel of his plea on the drug charges," Grossberg said.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Jake Wark, a spokesman for Suffolk District Attorney Dan Conley, said prosecutors opposed the motion to put his sentence on the gun charges on hold. He said the gun evidence was tested in a different lab and was unaffected by the drug lab scandal.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">"This is an individual who's been involved in just about every type of property and violent crime over the course of 40 years. He is a mid-tier narcotics distributor and was a plague on the community," Wark said.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">"We believe the judge should have treated the two cases separately," he said.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Dookhan has not responded to repeated requests for comment. But though these conversations are necessary to any review of control they should not detract from the gradual development that environmental activism is building toward reducing the damage we continue to do and restoring a number of the damage that has been already done. Actual development is manufactured in baby steps, such as the arrival of eco-friendly house washing and auto care products.Unfortunately, also often the politics of environmentalism overshadows the truth of ecological activism. Politics is just a dirty game. Any moment there is a position of influence available, those who aspire to it (and those who lurk in the shadows behind them) are motivated more by ambition and personal plans than by a true desire to behave such as for instance a good public servant. The junction of environmentalism and politics is simply as filthy. And it is not nice, natural dirt a tree can be grown by you in, either.Many of the biggest environmental groups exist in that house, and in many ways their message reduces environmentalism. Most of these agencies started out to combat one battle; after it was won by them, they changed their quest to stay alive and related. They no further have the motivation or purism of a grassroots campaign, but they do have more successful fundraiser and firm structures.Here?s an illustration. Imagine there is a bird whose natural habitat has been consumed down to one small part of grassland; and there is a designer who desires to create a suburb there and join the suburb to the town with a highway. That will damage the bird?s environment and force it into extinction, so a band of highly committed activists types to struggle on the bird?s behalf.They begin with merely a cause. Number money. No organization. They do what they might using their own money and time. Nevertheless the battle takes significantly more than that, and if they require donations the floodgates available to save their bird. Volunteers fall into line to participate their cause. They have to arrange to be able to handle the outpouring of support, and with that business set up they win their battle, stop the growth, and save yourself the bird?s habitat.By the full time it?s around, the leaders of the attempt have placed several years of their lives into limitless protests, appropriate issues, and lobbying. People work for the corporation, and although they do it for interest it is also their task. Donors have been giving to the organization, and given that they?ve gained them to those contributors trust. They may collapse their tent and finish it there, but it makes more sense to locate a new cause in order to help keep the business intact.As one cause contributes to still another, companies often become more general inside their goal. The love that drives a single battle for a single cause gets spread out. They collect political influence, which they?ve to use to be able to stay relevant. They often use it to perform objectives that may have a large influence, although the greatest initiatives in terms of political rhetoric aren?t always the best in terms of actual progress. When these businesses get behind attempts that crash, it adds fuel to the anti-environmental fire in the public debate.The public discussion isn?t about environmentalism. It is about the politics of environmentalism. And as such it?s detached from real environmental activism or change. Top NASA officials have picked a leading candidate for the agency's next major mission: construction of an outpost that would send astronauts farther from Earth than they've ever been.<p>Called the gateway spacecraft, it would hover in orbit on the far side of the moon, support a small crew and function as a staging area for future missions to the moon and Mars.</p><p>At 277,000 miles from Earth, the outpost would be far more remote than the current space station, which orbits a little more than 200 miles above Earth. The distance raises complex questions of how to protect astronauts from the radiation of deep space ? and of how to rescue them if something goes wrong.</p><p>NASA Administrator Charles Bolden briefed the White House earlier this month on details of the proposal, but it was unclear whether the agency had the administration's support. Of critical importance is the cost, which would probably be billions, if not tens of billions, of dollars.</p><p>Documents obtained by the Orlando Sentinel show that NASA wants to build a small outpost ? likely with parts left over from the $100-billion International Space Station ? at what's known as the Earth-Moon Lagrange Point 2, a spot about 38,000 miles from the moon.</p><p>At that location, the combined gravities of the Earth and moon reach equilibrium, making it possible to "stick" an outpost there with minimal power required to keep it in place.</p><p>To get there, NASA would use the massive rocket and space capsule that it is developing as a successor to the retired space shuttle. A first flight of that rocket is planned for 2017, and construction of the outpost would begin two years later, according to NASA documents.</p><p>Potential missions include the study of nearby asteroids or robotic trips to the moon that would gather rocks and bring them back to the outpost. The outpost also would lay the groundwork for more-ambitious trips to Mars' moons and even Mars itself, about 140 million miles away on average.</p><p>Placing a "spacecraft at the Earth-Moon Lagrange point beyond the moon as a test area for human access to deep space is the best near-term option to develop required flight experience and mitigate risk," the NASA report concluded.</p><p>From NASA's perspective, the outpost would solve several problems.</p><p>It would give purpose to the Orion space capsule and the Space Launch System rocket, which are being developed at a cost of about $3 billion annually. It would involve NASA's international partners, as blueprints for the outpost suggest using a Russian-built module and components from Italy. And the outpost would represent a baby step toward NASA's larger goal: human footprints on Mars.</p><p>But how the idea ? and cost ? would play with President Obama, Congress and the public remains a major question. The price tag is never mentioned in the NASA report.</p><p>Spending is being slashed across the federal government in the name of deficit reduction; it's unlikely that NASA in coming years can get more than its current budget of $17.7 billion ? if that.</p><p>One NASA supporter in Congress ? Rep. Bill Posey (R-Fla.) ? said he liked the idea of the outpost. But he said it would require strong White House backing to convince Congress to finance it.</p><p>NASA funding "always has been very precarious," Posey said. "And money is going to get tighter."</p><p>The White House did not respond to a request for comment, and a NASA statement was noncommittal about the outpost.</p><p>"There are many options ? and many routes ? being discussed on our way to the Red Planet," spokesman David Weaver said. "In addition to the moon and an asteroid, other options may be considered as we look for ways to buy down risk ? and make it easier ? to get to Mars."</p><p>A second major concern is astronaut safety. It would take days to get to the outpost ? the farthest NASA has flown humans since the moon missions of 40 years ago. Another concern is how NASA would address the dangers of deep space, especially radiation.</p><p>The outpost would be more vulnerable to space radiation because it would be largely beyond the protective shield of Earth's magnetic field, said scientists with the National Space Biomedical Research Institute.</p><p>"It is significantly more difficult to shield and protect their [astronauts'] health" at that location, said Jeff Chancellor, a scientist with the institute.</p><p>These worries are not lost on NASA officials. The planning documents note that an outpost mission would require a "culture change" that included the "acceptance of risk significantly different" from the shuttle program, which lost crews in 1986 and 2003.</p><p>Still, the idea has the potential benefit of focusing NASA's human-spaceflight program, which has languished in recent years.</p><p>The troubled Constellation program, started under President George W. Bush to return astronauts to the moon by 2020, has been canceled under Obama for being behind schedule and over budget. Then Obama and Congress launched the SLS heavy rocket program with no clear destination ? though the idea of a manned mission to an asteroid was frequently mentioned.</p><p>Stalking both of these efforts have been lingering questions about whether there is enough money and political will to sustain an ambitious human-spaceflight program. In 2009, a blue-ribbon panel of experts warned of the dangers of "pursuing goals that do not match allocated resources."</p><p>A member of that panel ? former NASA astronaut and space station commander Leroy Chiao ? had mixed feelings about the outpost idea.</p><p>A station beyond the far side of the moon carried a "dramatically higher" risk of radiation, he said, and might not provide as much value for the investment as a "human-tended lunar base."</p><p>But Chiao added that the outpost idea "makes sense for future fuel depots, and possibly for human-tended stations as a jumping-off
