Keshawn Perkins was charged as an adult with first-degree murder and armed robbery in the death of 55-year-old Hester Scott, an officer for 25 years.
The teen was held without bail on Sunday and didn't comment in court. He was appointed a public defender.
Perkins had skipped school and was sleeping when his grandmother caught him, prosecutors said.
The teen grabbed a lamp and hit Scott on the head, and then stabbed her several times with a kitchen knife, prosecutors said, according to the Chicago Tribune. After the attack, he took her purse, wrapped her body in a blanket and dumped it in the backyard, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors said the 9th-grader admitted to police that he hit his grandmother with the lamp "until she shut up," the paper reported.
Scott adopted Perkins and his three siblings seven years ago when their mother, a drug addict, could no longer care for them and they were placed into foster care, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
?Hester felt so bad about what had happened to her daughter and she was determined to do everything she could for the grandchildren,? her sister told the Sun-Times.
Scott's body was found Friday in a sewer trap behind her home.
Police found two bloody kitchen knives in the home, officials told the paper.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
