Movie Review: The Sessions: Sexual Encounters of an Unusual ...

Ben Lewin?s starkly honest and surprisingly moving sex comedy, The Sessions, tells the true-life story of Mark O?Brien, a man paralyzed by polio in his youth, and his awkward and reluctant fumbling towards discovering sex. Even without the salacious experiment that is the center of the film, O?Brien?s story is a remarkable one. Living on a gurney during the day and in an iron lung at night, he earned a degree in literature from Berkeley in the 1970s with a stick in his teeth typing out his assignments one letter at a time. After graduation, he remained in Berkeley, living in a small bungalow frequented round-the-clock by nurse attendants. Though his life is unsettlingly fragile (Mark cannot survive very long outside his iron lung), what he has accomplished while living prostrate on a rolling bed is incredible. He writes poetry and columns for a local newspaper. Trapped in a useless body, his soul manages far-flung mystic travels.

An off-beat assignment from his editors, however, throws Mark into a crisis of body and soul. They want Mark to write a column about sex and the handicapped. As he begins his research, Mark discovers some unusual and quirky details about the sex lives of various people living with disabilities. But Mark cannot get over his own inadequacy dealing with the subject. Paralyzed since adolescence (but wired and working, eh hem, down there) he has never had sex. ?He begins to wonder what exactly that means ? and the man who has spent his life trying to realize the fullness of his humanity despite a severe disability wonders what missing out on this one, significant aspect of life means.

Mark is played by the inestimable John Hawkes, who is rapidly establishing himself as one of the finest American actors working today. While his haggardly appearance has often lent him to villainous or psychopathic characters, here he whips up a sensitive and fragile portrayal that balances impetuousness, impatience, bitterness, and charm. Hawkes is emaciated, and its one of those performances that requires such physical exertion that it is hard not to imagine at least a nod towards Hawkes come awards season. But as a performance, what is remarkable is its tremendous restraint. A film about sex, The Session?s real dramatic fireworks happen inside Mark O?Brien?s well-hidden rumblings. Hawkes? challenge is not merely to act with only his face to animate, but also to continually offer and withhold his character.

To remedy his, um, issue, Mark finds Cheryl a therapist who specializes in sexual encounters with handicapped clients. A steely, coveted personality, Cheryl tries to maintain a detached emotionality towards her clients, but that professional protocol is challenged by the tender relationship that begins to unfold between Mark and Cheryl. Some sensitive viewers may find the prolonged sex scenes too graphic, but their rawness is necessary to Lewin?s seeming aim, a consideration of the mingling of stark physical and emotional realities. To a large extent because of these scenes, The Sessions? strongest quality becomes its restraint, which transforms the weekly sexual encounters between Cheryl and Mark into a complex blending of affection, mothering, and nurturing.

What detracts from Lewin?s accomplishment, however, is the movie?s marked sentimentality, which is counterbalanced by the sincerity of the two lead?s accomplished performances. This is most apparent in the scenes shared between Mark and William H. Macy?s Father Brendan, a floppy-haired liberally-minded Catholic priest who unofficially signs off on Mark?s out-of-marriage sexual experimentations and then perhaps takes too much pleasure in hearing about their lurid details.

As a dramatic trope, there is potential here. Mark?s devout religious convictions are challenged by his desire for expanding his experience, and Father Brendan?s celibacy in light of Mark?s explorations, renders him an inadequate, but oddly ideal, confidant. But the scenes with Father Brendan are too hammy, stooping for jokes that add levity but scatter the film?s focus. Likewise, Mark?s nurse Vera (Moon Bloodgood) enjoys goofy conversations with a motel clerk (Ming Lo) during ?the sessions,? and the scenes playing too much like a sitcom-y interlude, while unnecessarily tossing murky and potentially offensive stereotypes about Asian sexuality into an otherwise sensitive mix.

These bits keep The Sessions from being a truly great movie, but in our age of hyper-sexualized entertainment and advertising, the movie?s main accomplishment is significant enough. Without moral ? or amoral ? equivocating, The Sessions re-centers the sexual conversation, exploring the boundaries between with sex and love, emotion and pain, presenting a difficult tangle of responsibilities and affections. And given the number of wet eyes there were exiting the movie theater after the screening I attended, the movie may also prove to be the sleeper indie hit of the fall.

One step closer to rollable, foldable e-Devices

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? The next generation of electronic displays -- e-Readers, smartphones and tablets -- is closer thanks to research out October 31 from the University of Cincinnati.

Advances that will eventually bring foldable/rollable e-devices as well as no pixel borders are experimentally verified and proven to work in concept at UC's Novel Devices Laboratory. That research is published this week in the journal Nature Communications.

The UC paper, "Bright e-Paper by Transport of Ink through a White Electrofluidic Imaging Film," is authored by College of Engineering and Applied Science doctoral students Matthew Hagedon, Shu Yang, and Ann Russell, as well as Jason Heikenfeld, associate professor of electronic and computing systems. UC worked on this research with partner: start-up company Gamma Dynamics.

Foldable e-Devices Closer Thanks to Electrofluidic Imaging Film

One challenge in creating foldable e-Paper devices has been the device screen, which is currently made of rigid glass. But what if the screen were a paper-thin plastic that rolled like a window shade? You'd have a device like an iPad that could be folded or rolled up repeatedly -- even tens of thousands of time. Just roll it up and stick it in your pocket.

The UC research out today experimentally verifies that such a screen of paper-thin plastic, what the researchers refer to as "electrofluidic imaging film," works. The breakthrough is a white, porous film coated with a thin layer of reflective electrodes and spacers that are then subjected to unique and sophisticated fluid mechanics in order to electrically transport the colored ink and clear-oil fluids that comprise the consumer content (text, images, video) of electronic devices.

According to UC's Hagedon, "This is the first of any type of electrowetting display that can be made as a simple film that you laminate onto a sheet of controlling electronics. Manufacturers prefer this approach compared to having to build up the pixels themselves within their devices, layer by layer, material by material. Our proof-of-concept breakthrough takes us one step closer to brighter, color-video e-Paper and the Holy Grail of rollable/foldable displays."

No Pixel Borders

Importantly, this paper-thin plastic screen developed at UC is the first among all types of fluidic displays that has no pixel borders.

In current technology, colors maintain their image-forming distinctiveness by means of what are known as "pixel borders." Each individual pixel that helps to comprise the image necessary for text, photographs, video and other content maintains its distinct color and does not bleed over into the next pixel or color due to a pixel border. In other words, each individual pixel of color has a border around it (invisible to the eye of the consumer) to maintain its color distinctiveness.

This matters because pixel borders are basically "dead areas" that dull any display of information, whether a display of text or image. Leading electronics companies have been seeking ways to reduce or eliminate pixel borders in order to increase display brightness.

Said UC's Heikenfeld, "For example, the pixel border in current electrowetting displays, which prevents ink merging, takes up a sizable portion of the pixel. This is now resolved with our electrofluidic film breakthrough. Furthermore, our breakthrough provides extraordinary capability to hide the ink when you don't want to see it, which further cranks up the available brightness and color of the display when you do want to see it. With a single, new technology, we have simplified manufacturability AND improved screen brightness."

Foldable e-Devices as Environmental Electronics

Expect that the first-generation foldable e-devices will be monochrome. Color will come later. Eventually, within 10 to 20 years, e-Devices with magazine-quality color, viewable in bright sunlight but requiring low power will come to market. "Think of this as the green iPad or e-Reader, combining high function and high color without the weight of a heavy battery, readable out in the sunlight, and foldable into your pocket," said Heikenfeld.

The device will require low power to operate since it will charge via sunlight and ambient room light. However, it will be so "tough" and only use wireless connection ports, such that you can leave it out over night in the rain. In fact, you'll be able to wash it or drop it without damaging the thin, highly flexible casing and screen.

This latest proof of concept research verifying the functionality of electrofluidic imaging film builds on previous research out of UC's Novel Devices Laboratory. That previous research broke down a significant barrier to bright electronic displays that don't require a heavy battery to power them.

Currently, faster, color-saturated, high-power devices like a computer's liquid-cystal display screen, an iPad or a cell phone require high power (and, consequently, a larger battery), in part, because they need a strong internal light source within the device (that "backlights" the screen) as well as color filters in order to display the pixels as color/moving images. The need for an internal light source within the device also means visibility is poor in bright sunlight.

The new electrofluidic imaging film is part of an overall UC design that will require only low-power to produce high speed content and function because it makes use of ambient light vs. a strong, internal light source within the device.

Gay Teen In Foster Care Harassed, Humiliated By Staff At Christian ...

A former foster child is claiming he endured years of mental abuse at the hands of staffers at the Christian children?s home he lived in, reports the Miami Herald.

In court documents, the man (whose name is being kept private), recounts how, at age 16, he confessed he was gay to the head of His House Children?s Home in Miami. The director then dragged him to a remote location, cried uncontrollably and screamed, ?How could you do this to me??

After that, things went from bad to worse: The teen was expelled from his Christian school, forbidden to speak with his best friend, harassed by staffers and other kids, denied access to beneficial programs and made subject to repeated attempts at ?conversion.?

?They always told us that God is love, but I guess there?s no God there,? the victim, now 19, wrote of his stint in the group home.

Hearing his plea, the private foster-care agency that oversees His House asked the Department of Children and Families to investigate. But DCF Inspector General Christopher T. Hirst said the treatment the teen suffered didn?t violate any laws.

Even before the anti-gay harassment began, the young man already had more emotional baggage than most of us could bear: He was first remanded to foster care at age 10, when his mother was charged with beating him. While in the system, he was molested by another youth, who was later arrested.

To hear the folks at His House tell it, though, the kid lived the Life of Reilly: ?All children at His House are treated with great love, respect and dignity regardless of their sexual orientation,? says His House founder Jean Caceres-Gonzalez, the woman the teen claimed first accosted him about being gay. ?Harassment by other kids or staff members is not tolerated, and [it's] dealt with immediately. This child was no different. He fully enjoyed a safe and loving home.?

Sure, because there are just?sooomany heartwarming stories about orphanages.

Website Marketing Tips For A Successful Online Presence | Internet ...

If you have a great product, offer it on the Internet before someone else does. With the internet developing a business based on an idea, it has never been easier. Continue reading in order to gain some valuable and insightful tips which can assist you with your endeavor.

If you want to be a winner with Web marketing, a great website is essential. Regularly check your website for bad links, glitches and broken graphics, and eliminate them immediately. If the people visiting your site cannot find their way through your site, they are not going to make any purchases.

Give rewards to your customers for referring others to your site. One sale can be easily multiplied by simply offering customers a freebie or a discount when they refer others to your website. People love free and this can get more traffic your way.

Aim to always have some free samples or coupons in the shipping boxes. These boxes relate back to the product your customer will be receiving. Many consumers view coupons as a bonus, and will feel more compelled to become a repeat customer.

People often do not believe everything they read in ads. Like Pavlov?s dogs, people have been trained to be suspicious of an advertiser?s honesty. If you want people to believe your business is better than another competitor out there, you need to provide tangible evidence that people can see. Make use of before-and-after photos, testimonials, reviews and testimonials. You should not make any claim that you cannot prove. Don?t mistake your customers for naive or ill-informed people. Don?t ever try and pull a fast one. With honesty, you can build a respectable reputation that can keep you in business for many years to come.

Try remaining objective when looking at your site. Is it easy to use? Does it make for an interesting read? Is it user-friendly? Using SEO techniques and struggling to attract more traffic will not get you anywhere if you do not offer quality content on your site.

Are you looking for a way to improve your web marketing campaign? Use certain strategies to ensure your customers are aware that your site is secure. Add an explanation of your privacy policy provisions near the top of the website. This will assure customers that their money will be handled safely, and that they should have no worries. Let them know that their personal information will never be jeopardized because they have chosen to make a purchase from you.

To be successful in business, it?s very important to have an accurate mailing list that includes an many of your customers as possible. Give your customers several opportunities to leave their email address. Send customers information on discounts and sales that are happening on your site, or ask them for feedback about their order.

Mobile marketing is a great, innovative way to reach more potential customers and increase your sales. You could, for instance, send out mobile alerts when you are having a special sale. This will help you in marketing your product and it is a new concept.

If possible, interview people who are recognized as authorities in your industry. These interviews could be text-only, or you may post videos or audio instead. Use these interview to provide your readers with fresh quality content and to reach out to new readers who belong to your interviewee?s circle.

It is important to estimate the ratio of visitors to customers to see if your site is effective. There are many commercially available trackers, which can help you accomplish this task easily, by integrating some features into your website.

Marketing your most profitable products on the internet is just the beginning to internet marketing. Now you need to build off of those most successful items to drive more sales. When a customer buys one product, always recommend a related product or accessory. The popular products then can boost sales for other products, and make more advertising unnecessary.

To increase your database of customers, consider having a special sale for new customers only. This can increase talk about your site, and it might encourage new traffic. It also helps to build brand recognition. Of course, happy customers may just add additional items to their shopping cart before checking out. Be sure you feel confident in what you are selling!

Though Website marketing is a road to success, supplement it with a direct marketing strategy as well. You can reach your customers by phone, email, or fax to let them know the specials and services you have. You can find a lot of helpful information in the yellow pages, or in online directories.

Create a PR page which you business could use as a possible marketing strategy. Include content that online magazines or newspapers may want to publish. This will increase the visibility of your business without much effort.

When creating advertisements for your products and services, include descriptive text that emphasizes how quickly buyers will be satisfied. Place the emphasis on the speed and alacrity with which customers will receive their order. This could mean that it only takes a few minutes to buy and download the product, or that it ships quickly.

You should take the time to look at how others respond to your content, promotions, and even your business as a whole. When you decide to launch a promotion or an online event for your company, consider how people respond by reading about it on forums and blogs. Incorporate the advice they have given so that your visitors know that you are listening to them, and respect what they have to say.

It?s important to only have a few social media accounts that you can give your full attention to. A social media account is pointless if you can?t keep up with it. Stagnant profiles are seen as spam.

Everything you need to launch a successful internet marketing career is right at your fingertips. You do not need fancy software or any other get rich quick medium; all you need is yourself. Give all marketing decisions proper and due consideration before moving forward with them.

As this article has shown there are many things to consider when it comes to Web marketing. Continued success is how success should always be measured no matter how big or small your business is. This article will help you build a solid business.

Myst linking book replica goes on sale with full PC inside, won't take us to other worlds video

Most of us who remember Myst are content to relive the halcyon days of click-and-watch puzzle games by loading up the iPhone port. Mike Ando is slightly more... dedicated. He just spent the past six years building a replica of the Cyan game's signature, Age-traveling link books that includes a full Windows XP PC with a 1.6GHz Atom, a 2-hour battery, a 5-inch touchscreen and every playable game from the Myst series stored on a CF card. And while we've seen books hiding devices before, Ando's attention to detail might just raise the eyebrows of hardcore custom PC and gaming fans alike: he went so far as to gut and emboss a 135-year-old copy of Harper's New Monthly Magazine to match Cyan's reference tome as closely as possible. It's tempting for anyone who cut their teeth on CD-based gameplay through Myst, but perfect devotion to one of the better-known fictional worlds will cost an accordingly steep $15,625. We wouldn't have minded seeing some real intra-world travel for the cash outlay.

Atole de Calabaza Recipe for Day of the Dead | Devour The Blog ...

Atole de Calabaza Recipe

Few holidays capture the imagination like El Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. From November 1 (All Saints? Day) through November 2 (All Souls? Day), families throughout Mexico and Central America build elaborate altars to lay out the favorite foods of their dearly departed. Platters of rice and beans, moles, tortillas, tamales, calaveras (candy skulls) and brioche-like pan de muertos dusted with sugar welcome the spirits home ? albeit for a brief time ? before the food is shared by family and friends.

Atole, a hot beverage thickened with fresh corn masa, corn flour or cornstarch, is a holiday staple, though it?s enjoyed for breakfast year-round. Traditionally sweetened with unrefined cane sugar, or piloncillo, and flavored with fruit, a chocolate version called champurrado is served at Christmastime. This atole de calabaza is made with fresh pumpkin slowly cooked with aromatic spices like anise, allspice and clove. While the Day of the Dead is a time to reflect on the past, this richly textured drink will keep you looking forward to the crisp fall days ahead.

Atole de Calabaza Recipe

Atole de Calabaza/Pumpkin Atole
Atole will keep well refrigerated for two to three days. though it will thicken. To reheat, combine with a small amount of milk or water and stir over low heat until warmed through.

3 cups fresh pumpkin, peeled, seeded and cubed into 1-inch chunks
3 ounces piloncillo, roughly chopped*
1 teaspoon whole anise seeds
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/2 teaspoon ground clove
1 pinch of kosher salt
3 cups water
2 cups whole milk
1 cup masa harina (corn flour)
1 cinnamon stick, whole (preferably Mexican canela)
Sugar to taste

*Whole cane sugar also known as panela and sold in Latin American markets.

In a large heavy pot, combine the cubed pumpkin, piloncillo and spices with 1/4 cup of water. Set over medium heat and stir frequently until the the piloncillo melts. Continue to cook, covered, until the pumpkin falls apart, about 15-20 minutes. Pur?e in a blender or food processor until smooth.

In a large heavy pot, combine the water, milk and cinnamon stick and bring to a high simmer. Lower heat and whisk in the masa harina in a slow, steady stream, stirring constantly to eliminate any lumps. Add the pur?ed pumpkin and simmer until slightly thickened but still pourable, about 5-10 minutes. Serve warm with added sugar to taste, and garnish with candied ginger.

Ana Sofia Pel?ez?covers the spectrum of Spanish and Latin American cuisine on her blog?hungrysofia.com. From the?rich smells and flavors of the Cuban food?she grew up with?to modern Peruvian causas, hearty Brazilian feijodas and delicate Mexican flor de calabaza soup,?she?s always looking for her next great meal.

Classmates Remember Teen Killed in Crash | FOX8.com ...

GARRETTSVILLE, Ohio ? Students at James A. Garfield High School in Garrettsville poured their emotions out on a bulletin board Wednesday, remembering a classmate who died in a crash late Tuesday afternoon.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol?said Nicholas Stock, 16, was driving north on state Route 88 when his car slid across the center of the road into the path of a pickup truck travelling in?the opposite direction.

The accident happened as the remnants of Hurricane Sandy continued to push through northeast Ohio.

?The road conditions were definitely a factor,? said Ravenna Highway Patrol Post Commander Nakia Hendrix, adding ?it was wet and rainy at the time also we believe speed for conditions played a factor in the crash.?

Stock was wearing his seat belt at the time and was alone in his 1996 Toyota. His car collided sideways with the truck.

The teenager was a junior at the Maplewood Career Center in Ravenna but had many friends among classmates and faculty at Garfield High School, where administration made counselors available.

?In Garfield, we are all a close-knit community. This is a terrible thing to have to deal with all of our students right now,? said High School Principal Jennifer Mulhern.

The school sent letters home with students on Wednesday saying they are ?saddened and heartbroken? to report Stock?s death and are extending?its sympathies to the Stock family and to his girlfriend.

?Nick was a very quiet, thoughtful young man. He liked school. He loved his work with computers and he had an awesome future ahead of him working with computers,? said Mulhern.

Among those who admired Stock?s computer skills was Superintendent Chuck Klamer, who said he had asked the student to help him with the computers at his home.

?Nick was just an outstanding,?very polite young man, cared about his fellow students and fellow man, and I had Nick do some work for me using his skills with technology and he was just one of the finest people,? said Klamer.

?What a shame and a tragedy that he will not be able to contribute to society and live a life that he was prepared to live,? added Klamer, calling it one of the most difficult things he has had to ever deal with through his entire career.

Classmates were working on a way to appropriately memorialize Stock on Wednesday and to also send their condolences to his family.

?What I would like students to take away and learn from Nick?s death is life is so precious to make great decisions and good decisions at all times,? said Klamer.
