Analysis: UBS's huge Facebook loss throws doubt on Nasdaq plan
NEW YORK (Reuters) - UBS's admission that it lost nearly $356 million on the botched Facebook IPO puts pressure on Nasdaq OMX Group Inc

That throws into question whether Nasdaq's recently filed all-cash $62 million repayment proposal for market making firms harmed by the IPO will appease other customers, too. Market makers, including UBS, which facilitate trades for brokers and ensure liquidity, lost upward of $500 million.

Representatives from three of Nasdaq's largest retail market makers - Citi, Citadel and Knight - had no comment. A representative from UBS said the firm has not filed any action against UBS so far and that it would not do so "frivolously."
Many have questioned how UBS could have lost nearly 10 times what other market makers say they lost. UBS provided some detail in its earnings report, but left many questions unanswered.
UBS handles most of the order flow from Charles Schwab Corp, one of the biggest U.S. brokerages, with about $1.8 trillion in client assets. It also takes orders from other retail brokerages, including TD Ameritrade and Fidelity.
But that alone may not account for the massive loss. UBS also said that, as a result of "multiple operational failures by NASDAQ, UBS's pre-market orders were not confirmed for several hours" rather than in the usual milliseconds. That triggered its internal systems to re-enter orders multiple times, it said.
When the confirmations finally came through, UBS and other market makers were left owning large amounts of unwanted Facebook stock, which led to losses as the stock plunged.
"As a result of system protocols that we had designed to ensure our clients' orders were filled consistent with regulatory guidelines and our own standards, orders were entered multiple times before the necessary confirmations from Nasdaq were received and our systems were able to process them," UBS said. "Nasdaq ultimately filled all of these orders, exposing UBS to far more shares than our clients had ordered."
It also is unclear what role UBS's own trading system might have played in the losses or what legal action the company will take.
"UBS is going to say, 'you did not perform the service a professional is supposed to perform' and that's malpractice," said John Coffee, a securities law professor at Columbia Law School in New York. He added that Nasdaq's potential liability may be linked to whether the trading issues can be tied to regulatory decisions or professional service problems.
Nasdaq declined to comment.

Fed to signal more easing but stop short of big steps
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve is likely to show on Wednesday that it is ready to act against a weakening economy but stop short of aggressive measures for now.
Economists say the central bank could well push back its guidance for when it sees the need for an eventual rate hike into 2015 from the current Fed consensus of late-2014, a move that could signal the depth of the central bank's concerns about the economy and hint at new measures ahead.
Wall Street is braced for another round of Fed bond purchases, and some see an off chance that it might even come this afternoon. But analysts believe policymakers will wait until at least September, giving them more time to lay out the case for their preferred method for easing policy in speeches between now and then.
"We do not expect any new initiative from the Fed," said Eric Green, economist at TD Securities. "A dovish statement signaling willingness to do more will manage frustrated expectations for more (monetary easing)."
Fed officials will hint at their intent to deliver further stimulus in part through what most analysts envision as a substantially weaker outlook on the U.S. economy than that delivered in June.
At that time, the Fed predicted the U.S. economy would grow between 1.9 percent and 2.4 percent this year, an estimate that now looks optimistic.
"It seems like a virtual certainty that they'll mark down their expectations for growth," said Michael Cloherty, economist at RBC Capital. "Not doing so would seem almost out of touch."
However, the Fed will not release another set of official forecasts until September, so it will have to allude to such a shift through changes in the language of its closely-read post-meeting statement.
U.S. economic growth slowed to 1.5 percent in the second quarter as consumer spending faltered, and unemployment remains stuck at 8.2 percent, far too high for the comfort of a central bank that has a dual mandate of to keep inflation low and employment high. Job growth slowed sharply in the second quarter to just 75,000 jobs per month from 226,000 in the first quarter.
The Fed meets just a day before a key meeting of the European Central Bank, after its president, Mario Draghi, ratcheted up speculation of further ECB purchases of Italian and Spanish bonds by saying that he would do "whatever it takes to preserve the euro."
Global stock markets rallied sharply late last week on hopes that at least one of the two institutions would deliver some sort of fresh stimulus program. But investors have toned down their expectations since then.
Europe's crisis is blamed for part of the U.S. slowdown, as trade between the two giants economies slows and fears of another financial crisis keep businesses and consumers on the defensive.
Against that grim backdrop, many think Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke could use his speech at a the central bank's high-profile gathering in Jackson Hole in August to send a strong message to markets. He used that forum in 2010 to communicate the Fed's intention to pursue a second round of quantitative easing or QE2.
A third installment of QE would probably involve some component of housing debt as the Fed attempts to breathe fresh life into a housing sector that is finally showing some signs of healing.
Other tools Bernanke has signaled are under consideration include the possibility of lowering the interest the Fed pays banks to park their reserves at the central bank, currently at 0.25 percent, which could induce them to boost lending; and pursuing a 'funding for lending' scheme like the one recently implemented by the Bank of England, whereby the Fed might provide cheap short-term loans to banks in exchange for guarantees that banks will resume lending to individuals and firms.
The latter still requires some study, Bernanke said at his last press conference in June.

But if you turn this into a Saw movie, I will not be fine with that. If you turn this into a porn movie, I will not be fine with that either. :/ Bedroom scenes can be tastefully written out if that is comfortable with you.

+ Creativity. I will drop you like this if you stick a Mary-Sue or a Gary-Stu on me. I swear I will. ;~; I don't like to do that, but I cannot handle perfect or cliche characters. These characters are human. Human. As in, they have flaws and bad qualities, as well as good ones. Keep that in mind. |D
+ Contribution. I want in-put and teamwork. I am bad at making decisions for two people--not because I'm wishy-washy, but because I want this to be a group effort, yes?
+ Consideration. We both have lives outside of the internet; I am sure one of us will be busy, sick, on a trip, or etc at one point in time. I perfectly understand that, but I'd still like a warning if you are going to be away~ Of course, I will do the same. ;D
