Legally Streaming NFL Games for $100 Is Your Deal of the Day

If you've cut the cable cord, you've probably found that live sports are the hardest type of content to replace. Normally you have to be a DirectTV subscriber to stream NFL games on your laptop or phone, but there's a very interesting Madden 25 bundle currently on Amazon that'll get you access.

Amazon is selling preorders for the special edition of Madden 25?think Madden 2014?for $100, which is $40 more than the standard game. But supposedly the first 50,000 copies of both the Xbox and PS3 game have a unique code that'll get you access to NFL Sunday Ticket streaming?which brings you all 17 weeks of NFL games barring blackouts plus NFL RedZone?on your laptop or mobile device. From EA's FAQ:

Is a DIRECTV subscription necessary in order to view NFL Sunday Ticket via computer, mobile or tablet?

No, it is not necessary to have a DIRECTV subscription. Each Anniversary Edition aspecial code for eligible gamers giving them the opportunity to unlock a special, 2013 regular season (17 weeks) trial of NFL Sunday Ticket on computer, tablet and mobile devices.

There's a ton of fine print, mostly because this promotion is meant to garner more subscribers for DirectTV, which may not be a subscription you want. One detail that should be noted is that this Sunday Ticket "trial" won't work on the PS3. But after parsing through the FAQs, fine print, and tweets, Kotaku's always excellent Owen Good concluded that yes, Virginia, this deal does net you NFL Sunday Ticket streaming for $100. I don't think that's available anywhere else a la carte, for any price. Plus, you'll get the newest Madden on the first day it's available.

Sure, your mileage may vary. But I'm in. [Amazon]

American Geosciences Institute

Alexandria, VA Royal Dutch Shell plc (Shell) has awarded a significant five-year grant to the American Geosciences Institute (AGI) to aid in the implementation of the new Center for Geoscience Education and Public Understanding. The new grant, which will provide the Center with $500,000 over a five-year period, will help fund projects already underway, including various Earth science and energy education initiatives.

Founded earlier this year, the AGI Center for Geoscience Education and Public Understanding serves as a centralized 'go to' hub for essential geoscience information and a vehicle for greater collaboration among the nation's geoscience societies to achieve greater impact. The Center provides educational material, current information on geoscience topics, and a home for the Critical Issues Program that defines the state of science knowledge on key topics relevant to society.

Year one deliverables for the Center focused on four key areas: Earth science education, energy education, the Critical Issues Program, and the status of the geoscience workforce. Significant strides have already been made to address these crucial topics.

  • The Center is working to produce and disseminate a report on the Status of U.S. Secondary Earth and Space Science Education. This report will be released in June 2013, and will serve as a baseline for assessing the impact of the national Next Generation Science Education Standards, which were released in April 2013.
  • The Center has launched an energy education web site with classroom activities for secondary-level students.
  • AGI and the Center are working together to advance the Geoscience Critical Issues Program: in August 2012, AGI released the revised "Critical Needs for the Twenty-first Century: The Role of the Geosciences" document. This report provides congressional members with information about the important geoscience issues of our time.
  • Additionally, the Center has helped increase the circulation of AGI's prominent geoscience career materials and workforce data sheets. During Earth Science Week, a world-renowned event that reaches more than 50 million people, topics focused on Discovering Careers in the Earth Sciences and highlighted AGI's Careers that Change the World brochures, emphasizing the importance of geoscience careers to society.

"AGI thanks Shell for its generous contribution to the Center for Geoscience Education and Public Understanding," said Dr. P. Patrick Leahy, Executive Director for the American Geosciences Institute. "This award will help catapult the Center and the importance of geoscience literacy to the forefront of the educational system at all levels, greatly improving public and policymaker understanding of critical Earth science topics relevant to society today."

Car bombs kill at least 31 in Iraq

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - At least 20 people were killed by a series of car bombs in mainly Shi'ite districts of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on Monday and 11 others were killed by attacks in the southern city of Basra, police and medics said.

Scores of people have been killed in attacks over the past week as tensions between minority Sunni Muslims and Shi'ites who now lead Iraq have reached their highest level since U.S. troops pulled out in December 2011.

Eight car bombs in mainly Shi'ite districts of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, killed at least 20 people on Monday, police and medics said.

Two car bombs hit Basra, a predominantly Shi'ite southern city 420 km (260 miles) southeast of Baghdad. The first struck the Hananiya neighborhood, near a busy market and restaurants, and the second was detonated inside a bus terminal in Saad Square, police and medics said. Eleven people were killed.

More than 700 people were killed in April by a U.N. count, the highest figure in almost five years. Relations are coming under more strain by the day from the increasingly sectarian conflict in neighboring Syria.

Minority Sunnis, embittered by Shi'ite dominance since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein by U.S.-led forces in 2003, have also been staging street protests against Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki since December.

Chaz Bono 65 LBS Loss & Counting!

Chaz Bono’s 65 lbs weight loss is stunning the world of health and fitness because it wasn’t done with any fancy medicine or team of personal trainers. Find out what he did below, and see some photos and video. You may remember the name. News came out that the daughter of Cher and Sonny Bono was interested in becoming a man. Chaz says he has always been a man trapped in a woman’s body, and was finally able to make the transition. Chaz had always been a little “hefty,” or “fluffy” as some people put it. Well, now Chaz is a changed man. He has managed to lose 65 lbs, and is still working on it. I’m sure I have ever seen someone so in control of their bodies. First, switching genders all together, then losing that much weight without pills or crash dieting? Pretty amazing dedication if you ask me. Bono says he simply cut out starches (among many other things), and eats nothing but meat and vegetables. “I really feel very satisfied and comfortable with the way I eat now, which is amazing, and for me, kind of a miracle…I never thought I?d be that kind of a [...]

Pressure is felt is just about every walk of life. That?s not to say it?s always present, but at some point pressure will find you and it will weigh on you. Jobs, families, sweating out the final two minutes of Thursday night?s Kings-Sharks thriller?pressure is completely and utterly inescapable over the long haul.

The members of the NFL family know this fact all too well. Front office personnel, coaches, players, hell even the fans feel the pressure that accompanies the win-at-all-costs mentality of professional football.

But depending upon the situation, some in the NFL will feel the pressure more than others. As we continue our approach towards the 2013 season, here are the 12 teams we believe will be feeling the most heat in the coming months.

Earth's Atmosphere Is Slowly Escaping Into Space

Take a deep breath. You're lucky to be able to. Without a handy blanket of atmosphere gases to swaddle us all, we'd be no more than a twinkle in evolution's eye. But that wonderful blanket of gas is slowly escaping, molecule by molecule, and there's not much we can do about it.

As MinuteEarth explains, the process is very slow, and chances are we'll be long gone before its ever complete. But someday, our blue-green wonderland will probably be just another barren rock like its neighbor, Mars. So enjoy this whole life thing while it lasts. Happy Friday! [MinuteEarth]

X-ray tomography on a living frog embryo

Friday, May 17, 2013

Classical X-ray radiographs provide information about internal, absorptive structures of organisms such as bones. Alternatively, X-rays can also image soft tissues throughout early embryonic development of vertebrates. Related to this, a new X-ray method was presented recently in a Nature article published by a German-American-Russian research team led by KIT. For periods of about two hours, time-lapse sequences of cellular resolution were obtained of three dimensional reconstructions showing developing embryos of the African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis). Instead of the absorption of X-rays, the method is based on their diffraction (DOI: 10.1038/nature12116).

"X-ray diffraction enables high-resolution imaging of soft tissues," explains Ralf Hofmann, one author of the study and physicist at KIT. "In our work, we did not only manage to resolve individual cells and parts of their structure, but we could also analyze single cell migration as well as the movement of cellular networks."

Using X-ray diffraction, similar tissues can be distinguished by minute variations of their refractive index. However, in contrast to classical absorption imaging, this does not require any contrast agent, and X-ray dose is profoundly reduced. The method is of particular advantage when probing sensitive tissues in living organisms, such as frog embryos. In their study, the researchers concentrated on the motion and shape changes of tissues, cavities, and single cells during the developmental milestone of gastrulation.

During gastrulation, germ layers are formed and organized in their proper locations. Thereby, an initially simple spherical ball of a few hundred cells turns into a complex, multilayered organism with differentiated tissues eventually turning into the nervous system, muscles, and internal organs. Quoting the renowned developmental biologist Lewis Wolpert: "it is not birth, marriage, or death, but gastrulation that is the most important event in your life."

"Employing X-rays, we were able to watch joint and individual cell movements during gastrulation," zoologist Jubin Kashef points out who is a co-author and head of a young investigator group at KIT. For the first time, it was appreciated how cells interact with each other in a living embryo and how regions void of cells form and disappear. "It is like the migration of peoples. Stimulated by the migration of individual cell groups, other cells join in. They form functional cellular networks, which adjust to their changing environment. During migration, cells specialize to form progenitor tissues of future organs, e.g. the brain or skin."

"It is fascinating to have digital capabilities to observe and analyze these processes in an individual living frog embryo," Hofmann and Kashef emphasize. "In this way, fundamental results are obtained." The new method not only reveals morphological and dynamic aspects of embryonic development but also provides insights into their underlying molecular biology obtained by comparing the development of wildtype embryos and morphant phenotypes. The African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis) is one of the most important model systems of developmental biology whose study is of relevance in understanding human embryogenesis and diseases. In future research, morphant phenotypes will be correlated with the targeted switch-offs of key proteins. For this purpose, the novel technique -- combining latest X-ray measurement technology with advanced image analysis and developmental biology -- will be established at the synchrotron radiation facilities ANKA in Karlsruhe and APS in Chicago for routine use by a broad community of scientific users.

In their study, KIT researchers, which were supported by biologists from Northwestern University, used coherent X-rays from the Advanced Photon Source of Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago. Prior to this investigation, the method had been developed at ANKA. During measurement, a coherent bundle of X-rays passes the nearly spherical 1-mm frog embryo, which rotates half way around its axis within 18 seconds. By variation of the irradiation direction, information on the three-dimensional (3D) structure is acquired. As X-rays pass through different types of tissues at variable speeds, diffraction occurs. In turn, this generates a characteristic intensity distribution by interference a certain distance behind the embryo. Within the 18 s of tomographic scan time, about 1200 images were recorded. Similar to digital photography, every image consists of several million pixels. From this vast amount of data, the three-dimensional structure and the development of the embryo over time is inferred at micrometer resolution. If this process is repeated at intervals of several minutes, the resulting sequence of 3D images reveals all gastrulation movements occurring inside the embryo. Image reconstruction and analysis algorithms for the here-employed X-ray phase-contrast microtomography were developed at ANKA.

Immediate results of this research are the discovery of new morphological structures and the clarification of fluid redistribution processes. Moreover, the locations of centers driving the migration of tissues and cells during gastrulation were determined by differential flow analysis.

NASA's asteroid sample return mission moves into development

May 16, 2013 ? NASA's first mission to sample an asteroid is moving ahead into development and testing in preparation for its launch in 2016.

The Origins-Spectral Interpretation Resource Identification Security Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) passed a confirmation review Wednesday called Key Decision Point (KDP)-C. NASA officials reviewed a series of detailed project assessments and authorized the spacecraft's continuation into the development phase.

OSIRIS-REx will rendezvous with the asteroid Bennu in 2018 and return a sample of it to Earth in 2023.

"Successfully passing KDP-C is a major milestone for the project," said Mike Donnelly, OSIRIS-REx project manager at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "This means NASA believes we have an executable plan to return a sample from Bennu. It now falls on the project and its development team members to execute that plan."

Bennu could hold clues to the origin of the solar system. OSIRIS-REx will map the asteroid's global properties, measure non-gravitational forces and provide observations that can be compared with data obtained by telescope observations from Earth. OSIRIS-REx will collect a minimum of 2 ounces (60 grams) of surface material.

"The entire OSIRIS-REx team has worked very hard to get to this point," said Dante Lauretta, OSIRIS-REx principal investigator at the University of Arizona in Tucson. "We have a long way to go before we arrive at Bennu, but I have every confidence when we do, we will have built a supremely capable system to return a sample of this primitive asteroid."

The mission will be a vital part of NASA's plans to find, study, capture and relocate an asteroid for exploration by astronauts. NASA recently announced an asteroid initiative proposing a strategy to leverage human and robotic activities for the first human mission to an asteroid while also accelerating efforts to improve detection and characterization of asteroids.

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., will provide overall mission management, systems engineering and safety and mission assurance. The University of Arizona in Tucson is the principal investigator institution. Lockheed Martin Space Systems of Denver will build the spacecraft. OSIRIS-REx is the third mission in NASA's New Frontiers Program. NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., manages New Frontiers for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington.

Brazil port modernization bill clears lower chamber of Congress

BRASILIA (Reuters) - Legislation that President Dilma Rousseff says is vital to her efforts to modernize Brazil's clogged and costly ports cleared the lower chamber of Congress after a marathon debate and is expected to win Senate approval later on Thursday.

The proposal is aimed at attracting greater private investment and reducing union control in Brazil's main ports, which have become a hurdle to the expansion of grain and mineral exports by the once-booming Latin American economy.

After a heated 23-hour session that ran through the night, caffeinated lawmakers finally approved a modified version of the government's proposal, which had split Rousseff's 18-party governing coalition and sparked a strike by dock workers.

The Senate now has until midnight to pass the legislation, an addition to Brazil's outdated port law. Otherwise, the measure will expire.

Stevedores opposed to the bill returned to work late on Wednesday at Brazil's largest port of Santos, ending a two-day protest that had a limited impact on cargo movement.

The strike began unexpectedly at midday on Tuesday at the southeastern ports of Santos, Paranagua and Rio de Janeiro. But by Wednesday afternoon, workers at Santos were the only ones still reported to be striking.

Dock workers wanted to defend union control over hiring in the bill, which allows new terminal investors to contract nonunion labor. Some unions agreed to let operators hire outside of a centralized hiring agency, known as OGMO.

The bill will allow more private operators to build and run terminals at state-owned ports and permit privately owned ports to handle third-party cargo.

The legislation is an attempt to attract billions of dollars in new investments by allowing private investors to manage some of the ports as well as to increase efficiency and cut costs.

Brazilian port terminals charge some of the world's highest prices to move goods. Some of the high cost stems from labor agreements, but red tape, taxes and lack of competition between terminals are also to blame.

Rousseff has made the bill a top priority in push to improve Brazil's dilapidated infrastructure, which has become a drag on economic growth, with ships lining up for weeks to enter port to load up agricultural and other exports.

Brazil is in the midst of exporting a record soy harvest, while coffee and sugar crops are due to hit its overburdened ports within weeks.

Under Armour Armour39 Review: Beast Mode Unlocked

I know what you're thinking and no, this is not another sportswear company entering the wearable tech arena to cash in on all of you suckers. This is different, and that's a good thing.

First revealed back in 2011 at the NFL Combine, the then called E39 was embedded in a shirt that tracked an athlete's heart rate and g force during acceleration, among other things. Fast forward to earlier this year and the consumer debut of the Armour39. It's not an activity tracker, like a FuelBand or Fitbit, but an electronic performance aide that tells you how hard you're working when you're working it out.

Design

Heart rate monitors like the Armour39 (A39) aren't new per say. Polar and Garmin have been making chest-worn monitors for quite a while. Even Motorola makes one for its MotoActiv line. And the A39 is really no different except for the usual (and somewhat obnoxious) in-your-face Under Armour graphics and branding.

That aside, the A39 chest strap is relatively comfortable to wear and rarely slips down the torso once you've figured out the right size. The front of the strap can be a bit stiff at first but it softens after a couple wears.

The module that collects your biometric data is a half-dollar sized, replaceable battery-powered, Bluetooth disc that you insert into the strap before a workout. It even does an Iron Man impression and flashes when you've successfully connected the iOS app before your workout starts, like so.

Under Armour says the module's battery will last dozens upon dozens of hours. And because it's powered by a CR2032 battery, swapping it out is a piece of cake. Just be sure to pop it out of the strap when you're done, so it doesn't drain the battery more than is necessary. And hang dry the strap.

Using It

To start, you'll need to pair the A39 with your iOS device and the app to undergo a 10-minute, five-part assessment, which collects your resting heart rate, max heart rate and other things in between. This baseline data helps UA analyze each workout and whether or not you're hitting your WILLpower goal, which, by the way, is an option you can flick on or off. Like any other chest strap, it needs to be wetted down before it's strapped on.

Your WILLpower score or goal is set by you and measures your level of exertion based on how hard your heart is working. You might sweat a lot when you work out but that doesn't accurately measure whether or not you're working hard enough. If your ticker isn't in the zone?based on your age/gender/etc.?then what's the point of exercising? During your workout, you'll see the below stats in real time. You'll know when you're in the zone when everything that's green?your heart rate?turns to red indicating that you're in an optimal heart rate zone.

When you're done, you'll see this.

Because of the nature of heart rate monitors like this, the A39 wasn't exactly the easiest thing to compare against similar devices. You can't really wear two chest straps at once. I tried. It did not go well. In any event, I used Polar's FT60 as a parallel and found that the data captured was more or less the same. There weren't any noticeable spikes or dips during my usual two mile run and the data captured by both were more or less the same. But it's a lot easier to look at your phone than your wrist and that tiny little display with all the bells whistles that the FT60 comes with.

Like

As a performance monitor, the A39 is about as motivating as a personal trainer screaming in your face to get your knees up and not to break form. There's nothing better than seeing your level of intensity and heart rate in real time. There's simply no room for bullshit. You either worked out or dicked off.

You don't always have to have your iOS device on you while working out either. The module will collect up to 16 hours of data before it needs to be offloaded, says Under Armour.

Dislike

As much as I thought WILLpower was going to be a thing. It was a secondary feature to seeing actual biometric feedback. I didn't work out any harder because I wanted to reach my WILLpower score. I wanted to work out harder because I could see that my heart rate wasn't in the zone.

Audible cues would have been a nice 1.0 addition, like in Nike's Running app. Constantly looking at your phone isn't always conducive for certain types of exercise.

No Android app? No Android app.

Should You Buy It?

This is not, I repeat, this is not an activity tracker like the FuelBand, UP or Fitbits of the world. This isn't meant to be worn all day. If you're looking to better measure and tweak your workout sessions, then this is the monitor to get. Now, it doesn't do anything

The A39 as is will set you back $150. But if you don't have an iOS device, then you'll have to shell out an extra $200 for the accompanying watch, which doesn't appear to be live on the company's site just yet. Compare that to Garmin or Polar (depending on the model) and $350 for both isn't all that crazy sounding.

With summer just around the bend, it's time to get that winter body in order and with the A39, you'll get there in no time. [Under Armour]

Angelina Jolie Gets Double Mastectomy ? Actress Prevents Breast ...

Angelina Jolie Double Mastectomy

Angelina made the courageous decision after learning she had an 87 percent chance of getting breast cancer. Her mom, Marcheline Bertrand, lost a brave battle with cancer in 2007. Angelina wanted to make sure that her children wouldn?t lose their mother at a young age like she did.

On April 27, Angelina Jolie?finished the three months of medical procedures that the mastectomies involved. In that time, she kept this private and carried on with her work. Now, in an effort to inspire and encourage every woman to seek out information and medical experts who can help, Angelina, 37, documents her experience?in a?New York Times?op-ed piece?called ?My Medical Choice.?

Angelina Jolie Gets Double Mastectomy

?I wanted to write this to tell other women that the decision to have a mastectomy was not easy,? Angelina said in the column appearing May 14. ?But it is one I am very happy that I made. My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent. I can tell my children that they don?t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer.?

Angelina?s Mother Died Of Breast Cancer

Angelina?s mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand,?died at age 56?in 2007 after a long battle with cancer.

Ultimately, it was her children that inspired Angelina to take action. The actress often talked to her kids, Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Viv and Knox,?about ?mommy?s mommy,? and tried to explain the illness that took Marcheline from them. When the children feared that the same illness would take their own mother, Angelina often told them not to worry, but the truth is she carried a ?faulty gene.??The?Salt?actress says that tests found she had a ?faulty gene,? known as BRCA1. Doctors gave her an 87 percent risk of getting breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of getting ovarian cancer. It was then that she decided to be proactive and?to minimize the risk as much she could.

After many procedures, Angelina received plastic surgery to reconstruct her breasts and now her six children??see nothing that makes them uncomfortable,? she says.

?They can see my small scars and that?s it,? she writes. ?Everything else is just Mommy, the same as she always was. And they know that I love them and will do anything to be with them as long as I can.?

Angelina Jolie Hopes To Encourage Women

?On a personal note,? she continues, ?I do not feel any less of a woman. I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity.?I want to encourage every woman, especially if you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, to seek out the information and medical experts who can help you through this aspect of your life, and to make your own informed choices.?Life comes with many challenges. The ones that should not scare us are the ones we can take on and take control of.?

Fellow actress Christina Applegate?had a similar procedure in 2008. She?also had?a mutation of the BRCA1 gene.

There?s nothing better than using star power for the well being of others. Angelina has an enormous platform and she?s using it draw awareness to breast cancer and preventative measures ? we commend her for this.

What do YOU think, HollywoodLifers? Don?t you think Angelina is brave?
