Apple executive shakeup: Scott Forstall and John Browett are leaving the company

Apple executive shakeup Scott Forstall and John Browett are leaving the company

Huge news out of Apple today, as its senior vice president of iOS software, Scott Forstall, will leave the company next year after putting in some 15 years. Furthermore, John Browett -- head of Apple retail -- is also on his way out. The memo was delivered late today, on a day that is littered with other news that the company may hope will bury the bulk of it -- and, on a day where trading on the New York Stock Exchange is halted due to Hurricane Sandy. It's practically a given that Forstall is taking the brunt of the impact from its decision to forge ahead with an obviously subpar Maps application, all while trumpeting it as one of the pillars of iOS 6 during his keynote speech at WWDC 2012. The introduction of Siri as a beta product is also on Forstall, and we all know what happens to executives who flub something related to iPhone....

As the shakeup unfolds, Jony Ive, Bob Mansfield, Eddy Cue and Craig Federighi will add more responsibilities to their roles. In other words, Tim Cook isn't about to usher in new help who may thwart the company's efforts to continue at its breakneck pace. Curiously, Mansfield will be heaping more on his own plate just months after he had originally planned to retire. As for Ive? He'll be responsible for providing "leadership and direction for Human Interface (HI) across the company in addition to his role as the leader of Industrial Design." Eddy Cue will be gifted burdened with Siri and Maps, while also keeping an eye on the iTunes Store, the App Store, the iBookstore and iCloud. Needless to say, he probably won't be seeing too many walls outside of Cupertino for the foreseeable future. Federighi is being tasked to lead both iOS and OS X, while Mansfield chairs a new Technologies group that bundles Apple's wireless teams across the company. (Of note, Dan Riccio -- who was scheduled to take over for Mansfield prior to his retirement retraction -- isn't among those who are gaining duties.)

Just months after Browett was brought in from Dixons in order to lead up Apple's retail efforts, he's on the outs as well. Of course, he's also responsible for the branch having to tell stores that it "messed up" when he fiddled with staffing levels back in August. A search for a new head of Retail is underway and in the interim, the Retail team will report directly to CEO Tim Cook.

Apple software, retail chiefs out in sweeping overhaul

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc Chief Executive Tim Cook on Monday replaced the heads of its software and retail units in the company's most sweeping executive shake-up in a decade following embarrassing problems with its new mapping program and unpopular store-related decisions.

Software chief Scott Forstall, who oversaw the launch of the flawed mapping software and much criticized Siri voice-enabled assistant, will leave Apple next year and serve as an advisor to Cook in the meantime.

Forstall, seen as a polarizing figure inside Apple, had been billed as one of the future candidates to take the top job at Apple. He was the executive behind the panned Apple Maps app that the company announced with much fanfare in summer.

The moves, which come a little more than a year into Cook's tenure as CEO, were described by Apple as a way to increase "collaboration" across its hardware, software and services business.

"These changes show that Tim Cook is stamping his authority on the business," Ben Wood, analyst with CCS Insight, said. "Perhaps disappointed with the Maps issues, Forstall became the scapegoat."

Critics of the maps debacle, which led Cook to apologize to customers, had been calling for Forstall's head. "Does Apple have a Scott Forstall problem?" Fortune editor Philip Elmer Dewitt wrote on Sept 29.

The moves hand over substantially more responsibility to Cue, the head of Internet Software and Services who helped create the iTunes music store and App Store. The 23-year Apple veteran already is in charge of Cloud services and will take on Apple Maps and Siri.

Apple said a search is underway for a new retail chief to replace John Browett and that the retail team would report directly to Cook. Browett had riled up the retail store staff when he decided to reduce the number of retail employees.

Browett took over as head of Apple's retail stores earlier this year, replacing Ron Johnson, who went on to become the CEO of JC Penney.

Last week Apple delivered a second straight quarter of disappointing financial results, and iPad sales fell short of Wall Street's targets, marring its record of consistently blowing past investors' expectations.

You Gotta Learn to Laugh ? The Full Moxie:: Celebrity ...

A few weekends I laughed ? true, full-belly laughs. The type of laugh that had me bent over, catching my breath and literally slapping my leg. The type of laugh that led me to lying on the floor, yet at the same time desperately needing to run to the bathroom. The type of laugh that felt like I?d done a thousand stomach crunches.

During a girls? weekend at my sister?s in Charleston, SC, we took my four year old nephew, C, for some good ol? fashioned fall fun.? The hearty laughing was brought on by an unassuming jump pillow at Boone Hall Pumpkin Patch ? think bounce house without the walls, and on which adults are welcome along with the kids.

There was a group of kids bouncing all around, with their parents sitting on the sidelines. My sister, girlfriends and me? We tore off our shoes and crawled onto the pillow with C. And that?s when the laughing began. The sheer freedom and joy of bouncing around, up into the gorgeous fall sky, resulted in laughing. And laughing. And laughing. We laughed with each other, we laughed with the other kids, and we laughed with C. We left the pillow for the corn maze and the tractor ride, but returned to the pillow for more bouncing-induced laughs and fun before leaving.

When it was all said and done, it occurred to me ? I hadn?t laughed like that in a long, long time. Sure, I?ve giggled, chuckled and even guffawed. But a full-blown belly laugh? Doesn?t come to mind. And that saddens me.

When the movie ?Michael? came out in the mid-1990s (yes, the one in which John Travolta plays an angel), it quickly became my parents? favorite movie. And their favorite line? ?You gotta learn to laugh.? It is an inspiring quote, just not when you?re in a grumpy mood and it?s said to you by your parents. J

In our house, we DVR most of our TV to avoid ads. However, there?s a VW commercial currently on the air that we will literally rewind for, and watch a few times. It just brings a smile to our faces ? the sheer joy and exhilaration of the laughing.

In a world filled with work and responsibilities and stresses, there just doesn?t seem to be much time for honest joy and laughing. Enough opportunities to reach deep inside and bring back the true, innocent laughing we (hopefully) had as children and lost along the way. When my family needs a smile, we watch this video of my nephew learning to drink from a cup a few years ago ? his laugh is simply contagious.

I for one am going to try and remember those wise words from ?Michael,? modified just a bit: ?you gotta remember how to laugh.? My parents will be thrilled.

Yemen's 'Death to America' rebels bring calm to northern Yemen

The Houthis, a Shiite rebel group that battled the government in northern Yemen for years, has brought stability and investment to its territory. Its rise could threaten US-Yemen cooperation.

By Adam Baron,?Correspondent / October 28, 2012

Barely a decade ago, the Old City of Saada was tentatively placed on the list to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once an impeccably preserved relic of medieval Arabia, the ancient settlement is now largely in ruins. Centuries-old homes lie wrecked, their mud brick construction crumbling. Bullet holes pock-mark the walls of ancient mosques.?

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

For many here, the irreplaceable loss of one of Yemen?s most prominent historical sites exemplifies the senseless destruction wrought upon the region during years of clashes between government forces and the Houthis, a Zaydi Shi?a rebel group that has battled Yemeni troops and allied tribal fighters since 2004.

While a tentative calm has been restored in recent months, the violence continues to cast a pall over this rugged mountain town, which now lies under the effective control of the rebels.?Once forced to operate largely from secluded mountain hideaways, the Houthis? dominance is now unquestionable?in the provincial capital of Saada. The government managed to maintain control of the city throughout most of the years of fighting, but in the power vacuum that emerged as former President Ali Abdullah Saleh struggled to hold on to power in 2011, the Houthis were able to wrest control from government hands.?

Now signs bearing the group?s slogan, ?God is Great, Death to America, Death to Israel, Damn the Jews, Power to Islam,? pepper the streets alongside tributes to fighters killed during the years of conflict. While government troops continue to man their posts, armed Houthis run checkpoints undisturbed, controlling the vast majority of Saada and parts of adjacent provinces.

Life has seemingly returned to normal now. Markets in the province bustle and newly constructed hotels welcome guests. But the group's bellicose anti-American rhetoric and unrestrained criticism of the US government's policies in Yemen worry Western diplomats. Houthi leaders have sharply criticized members of Yemen's current government for their cooperation with the United States, capitalizing on rising anti-American sentiment in the country.?

"We're not against a relationship based on mutual benefits and respect," says Saleh Habra, the head of the Houthi's political bureau. "But we must reject America's policies, which are meant to create chaos in Yemen and the region."

Many residents expressed enthusiastic approval of Houthi governance, saying the rebels? rule has lead to security and stability. And as the frequent sight of construction attests, some here are confident enough about the current calm to invest, pouring money into infrastructure projects in the impoverished province.

?We?ve seen so many difficult years,? says Abu Ahmed, a businessman in Saada overseeing construction work at his new soap factory. ?But now, Saada is at peace, and we can actually imagine a better future.?

Still, reminders of the past are ever-present. The war resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars in damages and bombed out buildings dot both the city of Saada and surrounding villages. Few families here were untouched ? over 20,000 people were killed in the fighting and tens of thousands of Yemenis were displaced. And while Houthi leaders claim overwhelming popular support in Saada, the group?s rise has not been without opposition.

Tensions between the Houthis and local salafis, an austere branch of Sunni Islam, erupted in months of fierce clashes last fall; a violent confrontation between supporters of the Houthis and backers of a rival Zaydi cleric left one dead earlier this month. Yemeni politicians and tribal leaders have watched the Houthis' rise with trepidation, characterizing them as a destabilizing presence operating against the best interests of the country.

Houthi leaders say they are committed to maintaining the peace. But the group remains heavily armed, appearing ready for any coming confrontation.?

Despite the current break in violence in Saada, friction between the Houthis and numerous local actors ? from Sunni Islamists to political and tribal adversaries who aligned with the government against them ? remain unresolved. ?And while many here optimistically put faith in the current calm, others confided that, as long as the situation stays tense, there?s ample reason to fear that it will be short lived.

Sporadic clashes between supporters and opponents of the Houthis in tribal areas between Saada and Sanaa have left many Yemenis anxious about a resumption of large-scale fighting, which would likely derail Yemen's tenuous post-Saleh transition and throwing much of the nation into chaos.

?There may be peace now,? said Ali al-Quhom, a Houthi representative in Saada, ?but those who fought us in the past still want war.?

The phone will arrive in black, white and grey options -- all LTE-ready, with those interchangeable covers also incoming. Homeowners Shift Remodeling Efforts to Home's Exterior | Dallas ...

Posted by DallasRenovationGroup on October 29, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

Want to add more ?bang for your buck? when considering your next remodeling project? Curb Appeal. That?s right. Curb Appeal. It?s a topic so hot that popular television shows are dedicated to it. It is the first impression a prospective, interested buyer has of your home when conducting a realtor drive-by. Curb appeal becomes paramount when selling your home. Buyers have many choices, and when driving by a home; the decision is to look inside is dependent upon their first impression from the curb. An updated home allows for higher bids and less negotiating. And an exterior remodeling project could be just for the sake of homeowner pride. You will become the talk of the neighborhood! Exterior projects seem to be priortized by a homeowner?s ability to enjoy what they are improving.

DESIRED APPEAL

The goal to an exterior remodeling project is to transform your home from a dull, out-of-date look to a bold, fresh look. An aged facade can look tired due to lack of maintenance, or more importantly, a worn-out style. ?Style appreciation changes. What was accepted in the 60?s and 70?s is not today. One of the simplest and last expensive changes for improving curb appeal is paint. Altering colors and schemes can have a dramatic effect on appeal.

Some exterior remodeling projects trending today feature redefining banal entreyways with gables, columns, dormers and entry doors. Often times changing the entry door with a custom designed unit is enough to add some pop. Consumers might want to explore window and door replacements that can enhance the home?s look, while improving energy efficiency at the same time. An architect or NARI contractor should be utilized to help assemble multiple materials and architectural elements for a pleasing elevation.

EASY FRONT FACE-LIFTS

Homeowners should consider updating siding on their homes, as well. Although, adding vinyl and aluminum siding won?t always warrant higher home value, case-by-case examples, however, might give that exterior sizzle so desired. For example, replacing old cedar shingle siding that is split and leaking to fiber cement siding products, which do not deteriorate resulting in less maintenance, can give homeowners an added peace of mind. Other exterior makeovers can include changing actual facade materials ? brick to stone, for example, replacing windows with different styles and mutin patterns (the bars that divide the panes), and updating walkways and driveways. And don?t forget the ever-important detail of lighting. Adding landscape lighting, whether yard or structure, can jazz up an entryway. As recommended by realtors, front-of-the-house landscaping ? beautifying and updating entryways ? is important when giving your front yard that much needed lift. The rigidity of 60?s and 70?s layouts has given way to a more relaxed, colorful organic look.

Obama: Someone will be 'held accountable' for Benghazi

President Barack Obama speaks at a campaign rally Oct. 24 in Las Vegas. (Julie Jacobson/AP)President Barack Obama said in an interview that if the investigation into the Sept. 11 attack on the American compound in Libya finds that "there was a big breakdown, and somebody didn't do their job, they'll be held accountable."

Speaking with MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program on Monday, the president said that "ultimately, as commander in chief, I'm responsible and I don't shy away from that responsibility. My No. 1 responsibility is to go after the folks who did this, and we're going to make sure we get them. I've got a pretty good track record of doing that."

Republicans have hammered the Obama administration over its evolving public explanation for the causes of the attack, which claimed the lives of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans in Benghazi.? Stevens was the first American ambassador since 1979 to be killed in the line of duty.

Obama called the attack an act of terror in his first public remarks on the issue on Sept. 12. But in subsequent days, top aides repeatedly pointed the finger at Muslim rage over an Internet video that mocks Islam and described the strike as emerging from a "spontaneous" demonstration. The State Department ultimately said there had been no such protest. (Intelligence officials branded the attack terrorism on Day One.)

Asked whether the intelligence community provided poor information, Obama replied: "That's what we're going to find out from the investigation."

"But the truth is that across the board, when this happened, my No. 1 priority was secure Americans, figure out what happened, bring those folks to justice. We are in the process of doing that right now," he added. "Congress has been getting the flow of information continuously from Day One."

Obama also said there were "all kinds of legitimate questions" about what happened in the eastern Libyan city.

"But I do take offense, as I've said at one of the debates, with some suggestion that in any way we haven't tried to make sure that the American people knew, as information was coming in, what we believed happened," he said.

I am losing it. I feel like I am crawling my way through every day just to make it longer without SI. It?s been eight months since I injured in the way that I normally do. ?I can?t say I haven?t tried other methods, but the one that I am mostly inclined to I haven?t done in eight months.

I?ve been going absolutely insane recently. So many things I feel are attacking me. I just feel hopeless and awful and just downright worth nothing at all.

So much pressure is on me to be okay.

It just frustrates me how I feel so guilty when I struggle with going back to SI.

Can?t we all just admit that none of us are ?okay? and we never will be??

We are living in a world where being ?okay? only means ?I am going to put on this mask just like everyone else and pretend there is nothing wrong.? ?That?s NOT OKAY!

I am going to keep fighting the urge. I have to or I?ll never get over it. It?s just so hard when I have to act like I am the happiest person ever in front of everyone. I don?t mean that I want to sulk in front of everyone. I just don?t want to be fake.

I just want to be real and admit that I am not okay without the fear of judgement or guilt.

Futures Investing: Should It Be In Your Future? | munKNEE.com

While there are a number of funds and stocks that can be used to gain exposure to commodities, futures investing has long been the most popular and direct means of establishing a position. [Let's examine just what futures are, who should use futures and identify the various futures exchanges,] Words: 922

So says Jared Cummans (www.CommodityHQ.com) in edited excerpts from his original article* entitled What Are Futures? The Ultimate Beginner?s Guide.

?Lorimer Wilson, editor of www.FinancialArticleSummariesToday.com (A site for sore eyes and inquisitive minds) and www.munKNEE.com (Your Key to Making Money!), has edited the article below for length and clarity ? see Editor?s Note at the bottom of the page. This paragraph must be included in any article re-posting to avoid copyright infringement.

Cummans goes on to say, in part:

What are Futures?

Futures contracts are agreements to buy/sell an asset for a set quality and quantity on a specified date, with the price agreed upon today. Think of it as pre-ordering an item; the money exchanges hands immediately even though a product has not done the same.

The majority of investors will sell futures contracts prior to their maturity, this is because when a contract expires, it is physically delivered to the owner.?Therefore, if you own crude oil futures and elect not to sell your position, you are going to have barrels of crude appearing on your doorstep.

Futures contracts were originally utilized by farmers to hedge against poor crop yields or unpredictable weather conditions, but have since been utilized by a growing number of investors.

The first futures contract appeared in Japan in the early 18th century and the U.S. saw the introduction of these securities in 1864 with the first offering from the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT). Many futures contracts offer strong liquidity as well as a hefty volatility that entices those who don?t mind an added bit of risk in their lives. Futures contracts are traded all over the world 24 hours a day with products ranging from big hitters like natural gas and gold, to lesser-known options like pepper and canola oil futures.

Who Should Use Futures?

This is an extremely important distinction to make; just because futures are available to everyone does not mean that they are intended for widespread use. In fact, it is safe to say that the majority of investors should not be utilizing actual futures, but may instead choose to use stocks, ETFs, or mutual funds. Futures contracts are only intended for serious investors and traders who fully appreciate their complexities and risks. Owning these contracts requires consistent management and a watchful eye, as a position can unravel in a matter of hours.

Trading futures requires a specific account that is complicated enough on its own, but when you add in the volatility of these contracts and all of the underlying price drivers, it becomes abundantly clear that futures investing is not meant for everyone. For those traders who have done their homework, these securities will offer an enticing play on the commodity world.

Futures Exchanges

There are a number of trading platforms available to investors, each offering a slew of different commodities and rules to go along with them. Below, we outline a number of popular futures exchanges to help traders decide which will be best for their investing purposes:

  • Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME): The CME is a financial and commodity derivatives trading platform headquartered in Chicago. Originally founded in 1898 as the Chicago Butter and Egg Board, the CME has one of the largest options and futures line-up of any exchange in the world. The CME offers contracts of all kinds including agriculture, credit, economic events, equity index, FX, interest rates and other futures/options investments. The CME is owned and operates under the CME Group.
  • Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT): Established in 1848, the CBOT ranks as the oldest futures/options trading exchange in the world. The exchange offers more than 50 different futures and option contracts for investors stretching across a number of asset classes. As of 2007, the CBOT operates as a subsidiary of the CME group.
  • New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX): The NYMEX is the world?s largest physical commodity futures exchange, offering exposure to a wide variety of products. Commodity Exchange Inc. (COMEX) also operates as a division of the NYMEX and is best known for offering exposure to various metals contracts. The two divisions joined in late 2006, and were acquired by the CME Group in early 2008.
  • London Metal Exchange (LME): Stationed in the United Kingdom, the LME is a major exchange that offers exposure to futures and options to a wide variety of base metals and other commodity products. Some of the metals traded include aluminum, copper, tin, nickel, zinc, lead, and many more. Though founded in 1877, the exchange can trace its roots all the way back to 1571, when the Royal Exchange in London was opened, only trading copper at its origins.
  • Intercontinental Exchange Inc. (ICE): The Intercontinental Exchange is a U.S.-based company that operates futures and over-the-counter contracts via internet marketplaces. The company was originally focused on energy contracts but has widened its scope by offering exposure to a number of commodities including cocoa, cotton, sugar, iron ore, natural gas, crude products, and much more. The platform is much more focused on just a select few commodities and may be a good fit for traders looking to single out one or two commodities.
  • Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX): The MCX is a private commodity exchange based in Mumbai, India. The company was founded in 2003 and ranks as one of the top ten commodity exchanges in the world. Traders can gain access to a number of the usual suspects like gold and silver, but also have the option to trade a number of commodities focused on the Indian economy like pepper, cashew kernel, yellow peas, and a number of other futures that would be difficult if not impossible to find inside U.S. borders.

Whilst it is true, more often than not, that mining stocks move in the same direction as gold [and historically outperform that of the physical metal based on their better beta statistics] there are periods where this relationship does not hold. This Antique Skull Watch Ticks Down To Your Inevitable Demise

During the past couple of centuries, it hasn't been uncommon to design a clock or watch in a way that reminds you of your own morality, "memento mori." This silver skull watch from the late 18th century is a particularly well-made—and morbid—example. More »
